  • COLUMN: Privileged to see city’s heritage

    By TRISTA LUTGRING
    Feature Writer

Being at the young age of 26, as my co-workers like to point out from time to time, there are some events I’ve missed here in Perry County. However, after the past few weeks, I can say I’m very happy and feel privileged to have been here for Cannelton’s 175th anniversary celebration.

  • COLUMN: When good men do nothing

    By JIM ADKINS
    Guest Columnist

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

Much of what is wrong with our nation today can be explained by Edmund Burke’s observation. There are many good men (and women) in America but are they willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs? Sadly, too often, the answer is no.

  • COLUMN: Congress cedes power

    By LEE HAMILTON
    Center for Congress

There is a widespread sense, both in Washington and around the country, that Congress has just ended one of the most listless and unproductive sessions in memory. When its members bolted town to go home and campaign, they left a long list of big issues unaddressed, including immigration reform, “the fiscal cliff,” climate change, entitlement reform and cyber-security.

  • COLUMN: Insight into sheriff’s department

    By LEE CHESTNUT
    Guest Columnist

As your elected sheriff, I want the community to be aware of how the sheriff’s department is involved in situations affecting the county. As I said from the start of my term, I want the public to feel comfortable talking with me, especially about concerns or complaints. There has been a lot of coverage about the new jail and animal-control officer in recent months, and I would like to take the time to explain my position on these matters.

  • COLUMN: No regrets over immigration

    By GREG ZOELLER
    Indiana Attorney General

In today’s politically charged environment where accusations are leveled against a person’s character purely for political gain, the unique role of the Indiana Attorney General makes him an easy target.

I have been proud to serve the people of Indiana as their elected attorney general, the lawyer for the state of Indiana. Other people, including state officials sometimes disagree with my legal decisions.

  • COLUMN: Put former armory to use

    By MARY BUNNER
    Guest Columnist

I am so tired of reading about all the money this county spends for anything other than our youth. A visitors center? Really?

Our National Guard gave this city a building that holds endless history for this community. So what is the city doing with it?

    Nothing.

What a show of disrespect for men who have given much of their time and lives for our country. These were men who were hand-picked by President Bush to be among the first 11 units deployed to Iraq because of their abilities to defend.

  • COLUMN: The smells of harvest

    By VINCE LUECKE
    Editor

The smell of freshly harvested corn created quite a sob scene last Tuesday. No one was around to watch – except for cows in the distance and a few birds hunting for kernels of corn missed by a John Deere combine.

  • COLUMN: The truth about elected officials

    By BETH HAUSER
    Guest Columnist

To the constituents of Perry County, I am writing in regard to the lengthy article that was written in Thursday, Aug. 30, issue of The News regarding Ron Crawford’s bid to forgo the insurance for the elected officials.

  • COLUMN: An old-timer’s critique of books and tobacco

    By DICK HEDRICK
    Guest Columnist

In this electronic day and age, we are inundated with highly technical critiques and comparisons of various electronic gadgets, such as smart phones, iPods, iPads and other works of wizardry. My beef is that they use language with which I am largely unfamiliar. Personally, I fear some of these technology writers may be suffering from a short circuit in their brain wiring.
