“So what’s up with Unicorn Road? Did someone really think they saw a unicorn there?”

So asked a friend a few months ago as he looked over a county map.  He was staying near Derby and had already run across Utopia Road.

“I bet everyone there is happy,” he laughed.

Yes, I have a reading season, and each year the season gets a little longer as I reject television and radio listening more and more. The current state of our news cycle has helped push me back into books, and this year I came across four titles that I particularly liked because they deepened my understanding of food and farming.

  • It’s been a good long ride

    Jack Pate

    Guest Columnist

My father was fond of the saying, “he didn’t lick it off the grass, he came by it honestly,” and so it is that I came to spend the last 34-1/2 years as a fourth-generation newspaperman. It was in my genes, hence I didn’t lick it off the grass. My great-grandfather actually hauled a printing press by covered wagon from Tennessee to Oklahoma in the 1800s.

    Jim Adkins

    Guest Columnist

On Jan. 8, an anniversary in American history will arrive. On that date in 1815, the final act of the Battle of New Orleans occurred. That battle made Andrew Jackson a national hero and thrust him toward the presidency.

Dozens of blockbuster movies release every year, but only one in very many have a line quite as iconic as the first “Star Wars” movie, “A New Hope.” You may remember it as “Luke, I am your father,” but upon review of the dialogue in this scene, James Earl Jones as Darth Vader actually said “No, I am your father.”

Though these words took shape the day before Christmas Eve, I find myself with feelings of anticipation and even tinges of excitement as 2017 nears.

  • Developing agreements for the Hoosier National Forest

December’s Hoosier National Highlights article was written by Marjorie Tweedale, grants management specialist for the U.S. Forest Service.

As a Grants Management Specialist for the Southern Tier Zone in Region 9, I work with the Wayne (Ohio) and Hoosier National Forests and the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois on many different types of agreements.

  • Finally, a ‘Star Wars’ movie for adults

    Eric Harris

    Film Review

A funny thing happened after I purchased “The Force Awakens” on video: I didn’t immediately watch it. (I also never felt motivated enough to even officially review it.)

  • Indiana’s future teachers

    State Rep. Lloyd Arnold

    District 74

Many of us can remember a particular teacher who had a positive impact on our education. Through critical areas of growth such as academics or leadership, teachers make a difference in every one of our lives. Indiana’s educators are preparing the next generation of Hoosier leaders for their careers.

Want to track Santa Claus on Christmas Eve? The North American Aerospace Defense Command, better known as NORAD, is on the job and more than 1,000 service members will be working Saturday to track the jolly old elf.
