  • COLUMN: Keep an eye out for turtles

    If only the driver had seen the turtle sooner. I was driving to Rockport last week when I saw a car crush and kill a box turtle. I saw the passenger reach over and thump the driver in the head, not violently, but certainly in protest to what had happened.

  • EDITORIAL: Year-round school doesn’t help learning

    Advocates of a year-round school calendar believe that with shorter breaks children will retain more information than they do with the current 2½-month summer vacation.

    Yet as recently as the late 1980s, then Indiana Lt. Gov. John Mutz was advocating a return to a school year that begins after Labor Day and ends by Memorial Day, giving students slightly more than a three-month summer vacation. Among his reasons for that suggestion was it would help the state’s tourism industry.

  • Cannelton’s annual ACES walk

    Preschool through fifth-grade students and staff took their annual All Children Exercising Simultaneously Walk recently. Everyone took a walk around town and also utilized the new Cannelton Greenway.

    TELL CITY – The Perry County News has many photographs on file that belong to readers and while we don’t want to throw them away, we cannot keep them forever.

    SELVIN – Anyone related to Charles Edwin Harper and Mary C. “Molly” Riddle is invited to attend a family reunion at 11 a.m. Saturday at Yellow Banks Center in Selvin.
    The children of Charles and Molly are Bessie Leigh (Harper) Wright, Clarence Edwin Harper, James Silas Harper and Charles Augustus “Gus” Harper.
    Children from Mattison Franklin Riddle and Molly Riddle are Olive M. Riddle and Howard F. Riddle.

  • Herbal remedies program at library June 1

    TELL CITY – The Perry County Public Library-Tell City branch will host Cindy Jones, a representative of Herbs and Health Care Inc. at 1 p.m. June 1.
    Jones will give a presentation on using herbal remedies. She will focus on the various uses of single and herbal combinations as an alternative to traditional medicine. Developing healthy habits by using supplements will also be discussed. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the event to learn more.

  • Dale townwide yard sale June 7-8

    DALE – The Dale Women’s Organization invites the public to the 10th annual townwide yard sale in Dale June 7 and 8.
    The deadline to register as a vendor for the event will be Thursday. Vendor registration will benefit the group’s back to school supply program and the Toys for Kids program at Christmas.

    A softball tournament will also be held that day.
    The Dale Women’s Organization is a nonprofit group for the betterment of the children in north Spencer County.
