  • EDITORIAL: Old junior high school should be sold as soon as possible

    The Tell City-Troy Township School Board hopes to hear options this month on how to dispose of the vacant former junior high school, and we hope this will lead to its quickly changing hands.

    Options presented at last month’s school board meeting included listing the building with local real-estate companies or conducting an auction. We vote for the latter, as it will likely lead to quicker disposal of the building.

  • Missing Derby-area man located Thursday

    PERRY COUNTY – An elderly man missing for nearly a day was found unharmed Thursday morning.

    Patrick H. Cassidy, 86, of 11441 Tide Road, was last seen at his residence between 6:30 and 11 a.m. Wednesday. Family members contacted police that night after he failed to return home. Police said Cassidy became lost. He was found not far from his home and was transported to Perry County Memorial Hospital by a family member.

  • Commissioners’ certificate sale Thursday

    TELL CITY – The Perry County Board of Commissioners will conduct a certificate sale of properties with delinquent taxes which did not sell at the 2011 Perry County tax sale. The sale will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Perry County courthouse.

    In Indiana, county commissioners are authorized to offer for sale a tax lien on delinquent properties that remain unsold and unpaid from a prior year’s county tax sale.

  • Voter-registration deadline is April 9

    PERRY COUNTY – Perry County Clerk Jean M. Schulthise reminds voters that April 9 is the last day to register to vote for the primary election to be held May 8. Registration applications must be received in the office, by mail or in person, by the close of business that day.

    Voter registration forms and instructions for submitting them are available at the clerk’s office. Voters may also register at any office of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles or online at www.indianavoters.com.

  • Perry Central graduate earns top teaching honors

    EVANSVILLE – When Dr. Joy Cook, assistant professor of radiologic and imaging sciences at the University of Southern Indiana, found out she had been awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award for a new faculty member by the school, she was more than a little surprised.

    “I had no clue I had been nominated,” she said in a phone interview. “I feel very honored that a student or someone in my professional area considers what I do great for students.”

  • Recycling district eyes household hazardous-waste plan

    TELL CITY – The executive director and advisory board of the Perry County Recycling Management District are continuing to work toward launching a household-hazardous-waste collection program and have put a proposed office-paper shredding effort on hold to focus on it.

    The director, Ken Smith, said at a board-of-directors meeting March 22 he was awaiting a quote for a concrete containment unit to go under a building that will house the materials.

    CANNELTON – The only difference between two school calendars proposed by Interim Schools Superintendent Al Sibbitt at a regular Cannelton School Board meeting March 15 was whether or not schools would be open the Monday following Easter.

  • 7th Street project on evening agenda


    TELL CITY – The Tell City Common Council will be asked tonight to consider a resolution of support for a $1.2 million Seventh Street event and visitors center.

    A favorable vote won’t commit the city to the project but would allow the next formal steps of preparing designs and preparing the project for bids.
