  • TC soldier killed in Afghan attack earns Silver Star

    TELL CITY – Army Sgt. 1st Class Barry Jarvis, a 1993 Tell City High School graduate killed in Afghanistan Nov. 29, 2010, has been awarded the Silver Star for saving an officer’s life in that attack.

    Michelle Tan, San Antonio bureau chief at Army Times Publishing Co., reported Nov. 26 that Jarvis pushed platoon leader 1st Lt. Will Janotka out of the line of fire when an Afghan border policeman began shooting at Americans.

  • Boating-ed class in Jasper Saturday

    JASPER – Indiana Conservation officers will conduct a boating safety course at the Jasper Moose Family Center, 2507 N. Newton Street, in Jasper Saturday.
    Class will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m.
    The boater education class is open to the public and graduates of this course will receive the Indiana Boater Safety Education certificate.
    This certification will enable those who are 15 years of age with an identification card to operate a motorboat on Indiana waters.

  • Head Start students enjoy favorite books

    During January the children at the Lincoln Hills Development Corp. Perry County Head Start Home Base enjoyed activities about their favorite books.

    They participated in an activity from the lesson plan that included an author’s chair. Children were able to explore and retell their favorite stories with each other. Ben Eberle, seated at right, retells his favorite story to the class while Brandon Persohn, left, and Kyla Lowe wait their turns.   • Gogel earns membership award

    Albert J. Gogel Jr. of Mariah Hill was honored Jan. 30 with a 50-year Membership Certificate of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union Local 4 of Indiana and Kentucky.

    He received a certificate of outstanding achievement and a gold watch at the ceremony held in Evansville. Gogel began laying brick at the age of 25 and joined the union at the age of 29. He worked for Bartley and Perigo Masonry of Evansville until his retirement. He also served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

    TELL CITY – Tell City American Legion will host a euchre tourney Thursday at the post home.
    Games will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

    Indiana State announces dean’s list
    TERRE HAUTE – Indiana State University has announced its dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester. Students must have a 3.5 grade-point average or above on a 4.0-point scale in order to be eligible for the dean’s list at Indiana State.
    Area students making the fall 2011 ISU dean’s list include Sarah Roccia and Dana Sibrel of Cannelton, Justin Sabelhaus of Grandview, Monica Block of Leopold and Kelsie Bland, Ryan Henrickson and Emily James, all of Tell City.

  • Perry Central preschool, kindergarten roundup info

    LEOPOLD – Perry Central is accepting registrations for preschool and kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year. Children who will be 4 years of age by Aug. 1 are eligible to attend preschool. Children who will be 5 years of age by Aug. 1 are eligible for kindergarten.
    Preschool roundup will be held April 20. Roundup for kindergarten students who do not currently attend preschool at Perry Central will be held April 27. Students who currently attend Perry Central Preschool will automatically be registered for kindergarten next year.

  • Ubelhor – Sitzman

    Lori Ubelhor and Nathan Sitzman were united in marriage during an afternoon ceremony Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, held at St. Meinrad Catholic Church.

    The bride is the daughter of Doug and Julie Ubelhor of Bristow. Mr. Sitzman is the son of Jerry and Martha Sitzman of St. Meinrad.
    The bride was given in marriage by her father during the double-ring ceremony officiated by the Rev. Anthony Vinson.

  • North pulls away from Marksmen in 2nd half

    EVANSVILLE—Evansville North, with five players scoring in double figures, used its depth and quickness to beat Tell City 107-72 in boys basketball Thursday.
    Tell City Coach Troy Noble said, “We played a better team. We were able to score 72 points on the home court of a 4A school. They are talented, quick, the most athletic team we will play.
    “I thought we competed for 21⁄2 quarters. From the middle of the third to the end it got out of control.”

  • Perry Central falls short in double OT

    DUBOIS—Brian Huebner scored the go-ahead points in the second overtime as Northeast Dubois defeated Perry Central 89-83 in boys basketball Thursday.
