  • Stewart Warner trims work force

TROY - A decline in orders for the company's products led to the layoffs earlier this month of several Stewart Warner South Wind Corp. employees.

John Dixon, acting general manager for the Troy production facility, confirmed the job cuts, but declined to say how many workers had lost their jobs. He said staff reductions were comparable to an 18 percent drop in orders. The 130,000 square foot Troy facility is a division of Meggitt PLC.

  • State extends reporting time

INDIANAPOLIS - The deadline for reporting severe weather damage sustained earlier this month has been extended. Hoosiers who sustained damage from wind and flooding that began March 8 are urged to call a toll free number to report damage. The number, (866) 210-1925, will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT through Friday.

Damage reports also may be made online via the IDHS Web site at www.in.gov/dhs until Monday.

  • Visuals, plot redeem 'Knowing'

"Knowing," the latest film from Alex Proyas ("The Crow," "I, Robot") almost delves into M. Night Shyamalan territory — it does feature a main character much like Mel Gibson's character from "Signs" — but it saves itself with an entertaining science-fiction plot and some of the best disaster sequences I have ever seen.

  • PCDC, company officials express economic optimism

TELL CITY - This area has not missed out on the economic downturn, "however, we should fare better than most," Clay Ewing said at the Perry County Development Corp. annual meeting March 17.

The economy here "in the heartland of the country" is not as volatile as in coastal areas of the country, the chairman of the PCDC board of directors said, but it's important to ask, "how do we ensure these short-term problems don't affect our long-term prospects?"

  • Chinn unanimous choice as all-county MVP

Voters for this year’s All-Perry County boys basketball team pretty much agreed on four spots on the team, but there was a wide variety of choices for the fifth spot.

As usual voting was done by the three county coaches, the three who coached against all three county teams (Kelly Ballard of Evansville Day, Kevin Oxley of Tecumseh, and Rob Schulte of South Spencer), and me, who saw each county team play at least nine times.

Tell City guard Andy Chinn, Perry Central forward Reuben A. Schwartz and Cannelton guard Tyler Aud were unanimous choices of the voters.

  • Goffinet makes academic all-state

INDIANAPOLIS—Tell City guard Lauren Goffinet has been named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s 2009 girls academic all-state team.

Twenty-five seniors who were key players on their teams and excelled academically were chosen for the team.

Goffinet led the Marksmen in every basketball statistic and also excelled in the classroom.

She carries a 4.0 grade-point average and scored 1,780 on the SAT.

She plans to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and study secondary education with a major in social sciences.
