  • Hoosiers deserve real say in presidential-nomination process

    Depending on the results of this week's big primaries in Texas and Ohio, Hoosier Democrats may or may not have a say in deciding this year's Democratic nominee for president. That's a shame and our state's leaders, of both major parties, need to find a way to give Indiana more relevance in choosing nominees for president.

    The way we see it, that could mean moving up our state's primary date from May to February or March, or working with other states to create rotating regional primaries.

  • Schroeder picks Vincennes

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central senior Alie Schroeder signed a letter of intent Thursday to continue her volleyball career at Vincennes University.

    Vincennes Coach Tina Miller said Schroeder will probably play middle hitter, the position she played most of the time in high school, for the Trail Blazers. "Or perhaps right side. But we're recruiting her as a middle hitter."

    Asked how much she expects Schroeder to play next year, the coach said, "I think she'll play a lot. That's the advantage of a junior college. We have no returning middle (hitter)s next year."

  • Board awards shelter house work

    Ground broken Friday for Eagles Bluff project

    CANNELTON - Ground has been broken and construction is under way on the restroom building-welcome center at Eagles Bluff Park. An official groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday afternoon but two days earlier, the Perry County Parks and Recreation Board advanced plans for building a shelter house at the park.

    The board received earlier an $11,400 grant from the Perry County Community Foundation for building the shelter house and is purchasing a kit for the shelter for $4,000 from Penn Products.

  • Stroke screenings March 19 at EUCC

    TELL CITY - Stroke Detection Plus will conduct stroke and vascular screenings from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 19 at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Tell City. Stroke Detection Plus is a mobile ultrasound service that does preventive health screenings throughout the Midwest.

  • Help stop the spread of the flu virus by practicing preventive care

    CANNELTON - Influenza activity in Indiana generally reaches its peak in February. It appears this year is no exception. In recent weeks, a growing number of area residents have been absent from work or school due to influenza-like illnesses. It is too early to tell whether this season will be worse than usual and the nation has had relatively mild flu seasons in the past two or three years. That may make what is happening this year seem more intense by comparison.

  • Be weather wise: Statewide tornado drill set for Wednesday

    PERRY COUNTY - The National Weather Service, in partnership with Indiana State Police, the State Emergency Management Agency, Hoosier school districts and media, will conduct statewide tests of communication systems between 9:30 and 10 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

    March 2-8 has been designated Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.

  • Pride in Tell City

    Tell City flags fly proudly from Jim Meek's pickup truck last week. A co-chairman of the Tell City Sesquicentennial Committee, Meek and other planners of this summer's celebration are hoping to see more people flying Tell City flags available for sale. The small flags are priced at $15 each, which includes a bracket for flying them from vehicle windows. Larger 2-foot-by-3-foot flags are priced at $25.

  • Tell City leaders meeting at senior center today

    TELL CITY - The Tell City Common Council and Board of Public Works and Safety will hold their meetings today at the William Tell Senior Citizens Center, 1301 11th St.

    Mayor Barbara Ewing has said city leaders will occasionally meet outside of the council chambers.

    The works board meets at 6 p.m., with the council meeting following at 7. Both meetings are open to the public.

  • More money available for home repair

    Another $140,000 approved

    PERRY COUNTY - Perry County is getting an additional $140,000 in home-repair grant funding, Tony Pappano announced Thursday, saying again while he appreciates the money, it's another "drop in the bucket."

    He expected to notify the county commissioners at their regular meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. today in the county courthouse.
