Warrick County deputies, troopers capture Day, Helsley

NEWBURGH – Two escapees from the Branchville Correctional Facility were captured Tuesday evening after they crashed a stolen car while trying to outrun state police and Warrick County sheriff’s deputies.

Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, had been on the run since scaling a prison fence the night of April 4. They allegedly stole a pickup truck from J.H. Rudolph & Co.’s asphalt plant near Interstate 64 and fled to western Kentucky, where Day has relatives.

I was sound asleep in a Louisville hotel room April 3 when my cell phone rang with news of a nearly fatal house fire.

"Where are you?" asked the caller, a Tell City fireman who knows I'm usually Johnny-on-the-spot with a camera at fires. But I was at an annual newspaper meeting and at 3 in the morning, could only relay information about the blaze on 12th Street to the newsroom. NEWBURGH - Zach Avallone won two events but Tell City lost to Castle 80-43 in boys track Wednesday.

Avallone won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.41 seconds and the long jump at 18 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

He placed second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.08.

Tell City sprinter Kyle Kessinger, still recovering from a preseason ankle injury, ran only one race but won it handily.

He took the 400 dash in 51.27 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second behind fifth place on Tell City's all-time honor roll.

MARENGO - Cannelton's girls softball team got its first hits and run of the season Thursday but lost to Crawford County 24-1.

Crawford County put the game away with 18 runs in the first inning, when the Bulldogs committed five errors.

But the Bulldogs settled down after that and committed only two errors the rest of the way.

After being no-hit in their first two games, they got three hits in this game, including a double to left-center field by Stephanie Posey in the fourth inning.

Posey came around to score on two ground outs, with Shy May getting the RBI.
