  • Group takes STEPs to increase fitness together

    Encouragement, other rewards increase motivation

TELL CITY - Customers of a local fitness center are bending together in their war against unwanted weight, and invite other men and women of Perry County to join them.

Shed Those Extra Pounds classes are free and meet at 6 p.m. Mondays in the basement of Everbody's Fun and Fitness Center, 710 Fulton St., Tell City.

Libby Bauer and Sharlene Crossley started STEP "because there were no evening meetings for Weight Watchers in Tell City," Bauer said.

  • UPDATE - Freedom ends for 2 escapees

Warrick County deputies, troopers capture Day, Helsley

NEWBURGH – Two escapees from the Branchville Correctional Facility were captured Tuesday evening after they crashed a stolen car while trying to outrun state police and Warrick County sheriff’s deputies.

Conan Helsley, 20, and Kent Day, 45, had been on the run since scaling a prison fence the night of April 4. They allegedly stole a pickup truck from J.H. Rudolph & Co.’s asphalt plant near Interstate 64 and fled to western Kentucky, where Day has relatives.

  • Nation needs fundamental change

Hoosiers have been presented with a historic opportunity this year. For the first time in four decades, we will have a voice in choosing a presidential candidate.

We will have a voice in who will guide our nation as we move into a post-Bush world. This election is historic, and we must choose our candidate wisely. I am supporting Barack Obama, and I want to tell you why.

  • Hammack, others true heroes

I was sound asleep in a Louisville hotel room April 3 when my cell phone rang with news of a nearly fatal house fire.

"Where are you?" asked the caller, a Tell City fireman who knows I'm usually Johnny-on-the-spot with a camera at fires. But I was at an annual newspaper meeting and at 3 in the morning, could only relay information about the blaze on 12th Street to the newsroom. We had a story online later that day and a print story in last Monday's edition. A follow-up piece appeared in Thursday's News.

  • Prison escape brings horrible possibilities for Indiana, Kentucky residents

"Unacceptable" is the best adjective to describe the escape of two prisoners from Branchville Correctional Facility. To put that another way, we will not tolerate killers and other violent criminals wandering freely in our community.

Also unacceptable is the failure of a prison-escape-alert system to do its job.

  • Castle boys outrun Marksmen

NEWBURGH - Zach Avallone won two events but Tell City lost to Castle 80-43 in boys track Wednesday.

Avallone won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.41 seconds and the long jump at 18 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

He placed second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.08.

Tell City sprinter Kyle Kessinger, still recovering from a preseason ankle injury, ran only one race but won it handily.

He took the 400 dash in 51.27 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second behind fifth place on Tell City's all-time honor roll.

  • Harrison nips Tell City

EVANSVILLE - Harrison won No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles to edge Tell City 3-2 in girls tennis Thursday.

Tell City's Stephani Wrye beat Daniele Coleman 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 singles.

The Marksmen also won in No. 2 doubles, with Kari Gladish and Jennifer McDaniel outlasting Mandy Brooks and Ellie Small 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 10-6.

Harrison won the top two singles matches each 6-1, 6-1. Sarah Beudel beat Kathi Kassen in No. 1 and Sarah Mastison beat Bethany Peter in No. 2.

  • Crawford County defeats Cannelton

MARENGO - Cannelton's girls softball team got its first hits and run of the season Thursday but lost to Crawford County 24-1.

Crawford County put the game away with 18 runs in the first inning, when the Bulldogs committed five errors.

But the Bulldogs settled down after that and committed only two errors the rest of the way.

After being no-hit in their first two games, they got three hits in this game, including a double to left-center field by Stephanie Posey in the fourth inning.

Posey came around to score on two ground outs, with Shy May getting the RBI.

  • PC falls to Raiders, Wolfpack

LEOPOLD - Opponents' late-inning rallies beat Perry Central in baseball Wednesday and Thursday.

Southridge beat the Commodores 8-5 at Huntingburg Wednesday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 5-5 tie.

Perry Central led Crawford County 7-3 going into the seventh inning Thursday. But the Wolfpack rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to win the PLAC game 8-7.

Three hits, three walks and two errors fueled that rally.

Perry Central left-hander Drew Schroer gave up the tying runs and was then relieved by Seth Raetz, who took the loss.
