  • Cannelton leaders accept construction bid

    Utilities chief: Copper thieves risking severe injuries

    CANNELTON - Members of Cannelton's board of public works and safety and common council accepted a $1,500 bid for repairs to the city's street-department building at a regular meeting March 10.

    The bid from Charlie Weatherholt was the lowest of two received for repairs to a gutter and sliding door.

  • Should PAC pick 12?

    Should the Pocket Athletic Conference pick 12 players for its all-conference basketball teams now that there are nine teams in the conference? Several coaches think so.

    Like most conferences, the PAC has named 10 players to each all-conference basketball team for decades.

    But this year Forest Park joined the conference while no team left in basketball (Tecumseh will stop competing in the conference in football next year, when Forest Park starts varsity football).

  • Girls basketball has most repeat winners at Tell City

    TELL CITY - The girls basketball team had the only repeat award winners at Tell City's winter sports banquet Monday.

    Kara McClintic, named the girls basketball Most Valuable Player last year, shared that award with Lauren Goffinet this year.

    Marianne Krueger and Dana Sibrel shared the team's most valuable defensive player award for the second year in a row. Krueger also won it two years ago.

    Krueger also won the team's hustle award for the third year in a row (she shared it with Emily Harpenau last year).

  • Aiming High

    Tell City Street Department employee Larry Pfeiffer stretches to make a final cut while trimming trees in the 300 block of Main Street Tuesday. Pfeiffer operates the city's sweeper and said regular pruning not only keeps the branches from bothering pedestrians, but lets him sweep up to the curb. New trees will be planted in coming weeks in four blocks of Main Street and according to the architect of a Main Street project, their branches shouldn't pose any problems to walkers or the city's street sweeper.

  • Veterans helping veterans: Heroes one and all

    TELL CITY - At least three days a week, a van travels to Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics in and around Louisville, Ky. In the van are local veterans who without the Disabled American Veterans van and the volunteers who drive it, would not have a way to their appointments.

    At first, American Legion Post 213 Commander Gene Risse said, volunteers drove veterans to appointments in their own vehicles. Then in 2004, local veterans raised enough money to pay for half of the cost of a van while DAV paid the rest.

  • Musical lineup announced for Schweizer Fest

    TELL CITY - Schweizer Fest Inc. has released the lineup of bands who will perform during this year's Schweizer Fest and sesquicentennial celebration. Performing Wednesday, Aug. 6, will be Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band. Thursday's headliner will be Linda Smith with Above the Law taking to the stage Friday, Aug. 8. StompBox 40 will close out the celebration Saturday, Aug. 9.

  • Breakfast with the Easter Bunny

    Epsilon Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa will sponsor its annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny March 22 at Tell City Moose Lodge 1424. From 9 to 11 a.m., children up to fifth grade are invited to participate in activities, enjoy breakfast and take photos with the Easter Bunny. All children will receive a candy bag. Committee members are Martha DuPre, Sonya Hagedorn, Jean Schulthise, Betty Cash, Sandy Traphagen, Sarah Miller and Dr. Ana Lagunzad.

  • Swearing to serve (full time)

    Lee Hall recites an oath of office administered by Cannelton Mayor Smokey Graves between meetings of the city's board of public works and safety and common council Monday. Police Chief Kenny Kellems secured the council's authorization last month to move Hall from part-time to full-time status.

  • Hitz named Tell City football coach

    TELL CITY - Don Hitz, who has served as an assistant coach at Tell City and Heritage Hills, was named Tell City's new head football coach Tuesday.

    Hitz, 44, served as an assistant coach at Tell City 1997-99 and returned to Tell City as an assistant for the 2007 season. He coached linebackers and receivers.

    He was also an assistant at Heritage Hills 1994-96, where he coached junior high teams and the high school receivers.

  • High water closes several roads

    VINCENNES - The Indiana Department of Transportation announces rising waters have caused the closure of several roads in the Vincennes District.

    The closures will remain in effect until waters recede. The following sections of roadway have either been closed or INDOT is advising motorists to use caution around these areas of high water.

    In Perry County, Indiana 66 from Indiana 166 at Rocky Point to Indiana 237 in Tell City is closed, as is the highway between Rocky Point and Derby and between Derby and Sulphur.
