  • PC 4th in quadrangular match

    SANTA CLAUS - After shooting its best round ever Tuesday, Perry Central's boys golf team shot 22 strokes worse Thursday as it finished fourth in a four-team meet.

    Jasper won with 153 strokes on the Christmas Lake course. Southridge shot 175, Forest Park 180, and Perry Central 190.

    "We just didn't play very well," said Perry Central Coach Bill Dickerson

    He noted that Christmas Lake is the longest course the Commodores play all year and it was wet. "It was just a little different for us.

  • Kessinger wins twice in PAC track meet

    FORT BRANCH - Tell City senior Kyle Kessinger won two sprints to lead Tell City to third place in the PAC boys track meet Thursday.

    Forest Park won the meet with 142 points, four more than runner-up Heritage Hills. Tell City scored 88.

    Kessinger ran the 100-meter dash in 11.12 seconds and the 400 in 51.22 for his two blue ribbons.

    His 100 time is the fifth best on Tell City's all-time honor roll in that event and is just 10-hundredths of a second behind Davin Harpe's school record.

    Kessinger's wins were the Marksmen's only first places.

  • Return to yesteryear

    Perry Central fourth-grader Corey Hall tries his hand at milking a goat during Wednesday's Old Fashioned Day at the 4-H fairgrounds. Fourth-graders from Perry Central, Cannelton and Tell City participated in a variety of old-time farm chores, from shelling corn by hand to making butter that was smeared on homemade bread. They were also treated to horse-drawn wagon rides, second photo, and learned about pioneer-survival skills, rug-making and blacksmithing. The event is sponsored each year by the county's Purdue University extension office with help from several volunteers.

  • Time to file for deductions arrives

    PERRY COUNTY - County Auditor Connie A. Berger would like to remind taxpayers to file for property-tax deductions and exemptions. The one-time filing of deductions or exemptions is still in effect unless your status has changed. Any deductions filed by June 10 of this year will be applied to taxes payable in 2009, except for the Homestead Credit-Standard Deduction, which can be filed until Dec. 31, 2008, and then it will be applied to taxes payable in 2009.

  • Judges add 'distinction' award to gold rating

    Envelope carries surprise for TCHS band

    TELL CITY - Tell City High School Music Director Barry Reasoner was surprised to learn his students earned an additional award atop the gold rating they achieved at an Indiana State School Music Association concert-band competition last month.

    As The News reported April 24, one judge called the young performers' effort "the most musical performance of the weekend so far."

  • Seat-belt campaign to run statewide Friday to June 1

    PERRY COUNTY - In an effort to save lives while increasing seatbelt use across the state, officers from Cannelton and Tell City police departments, and Perry County Sheriff's Department will join with more than 250 state and local law-enforcement agencies this spring to launch Indiana's Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign.

    The statewide seatbelt mobilization will take place from May 16 to June 1, covering the busy Memorial Day holiday.

  • Sesquicentennial items available

    Official Tell City Sesquicentennial items are now being carried at several local businesses. Tell City flags, coasters and steins can be purchased at William Tell Antiques, Gatherings, Celebrations and Tassels Fine Gifts. Those stores also have Sesquicentennial cookbooks sponsored by Mu Gamma Sorority. Also carrying Tell City 150 merchandise are the Perry County Chamber of Commerce and Tell City Historical Society, whose museum is open Sunday afternoons. A set of four coasters is priced at $12 with the German-made steins costing $35.

  • Faulkenberg honored

    State Rep. Russ Stilwell presented retired Tell City Police Chief David Faulkenberg with an Indiana General Assembly resolution honoring him for more than 30 years of service. Stilwell said the honor, presented May 5, reflects not only Faulkenberg's service and dedication but the efforts of all law-enforcement officers who put their lives on the line. "As a community, we often don't realize the dangers these people face," Stilwell said. Faulkenberg now works as the county's director of community service.

  • Couple faces meth charges, felony counts of child neglect

    TROY - A husband and wife who saw their home searched by state and local police last month remained in jail Friday after their arrest on methamphetamine charges.

    Patrick L. Keown, 30, and his 24-year-old wife, Whitney, each face a Class B felony charge of dealing in methamphetamine, as well as lesser felony charges of possessing the drug, maintaining a common nuisance, possessing chemical reagents used to make meth and dumping controlled substance waste. Each also faces a Class D felony charge of neglect of a dependent.
