  • News staffers claim five writing awards

    Newspaper honored again for hard-hitting editorials

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Perry County News brought home five writing awards, including a first-place honor, from Friday's 2008 editorial awards luncheon sponsored by Landmark Community Newspapers Inc.

    Winners were announced Friday at the conclusion of LCNI's annual editorial meeting. The Shelbyville, Ky.-based company owns The News and more than 50 other community newspapers.

    Managing Editor Kevin Koelling won first place in the category for editorial writing.

  • Guidance sought on township assessors

    Promised memo says several issues sent to attorney general

    TELL CITY - Perry County Council members postponed Tuesday, for a third time, action concerning the transfer of township-assessor duties to the county assessor's office.

    "A memo came down," Council President Pete Franzman said, referring to guidance from state officials the council had expected to, but didn't receive in time for an April 1 meeting, "and we ran it by the county attorney. Until the attorney general issues rulings on these things, (the attorney) recommends we don't do anything."

  • Junior-high band earns contest silver

    Tell City musicians miss gold by 1 point

    TELL CITY - Tell City Junior High School musicians captured a silver award at an Indiana State School Music Association organizational festival Friday at Columbus East High School.

    Of the three judges, "one gave us gold and two gave us silver," Music Director Barry Reasoner said Tuesday, "and the majority rules."

    One of the judges awarding a silver rating said the seventh- and eighth-graders were only a point from earning gold, he added.

  • Escaped murderer, second man elude search

    Two scale prison fence at night, believed to be in western Kentucky

    BRANCHVILLE - Branchville Correctional Facility and its nearly 1,300 offenders remained on lockdown Wednesday as the search continued for two inmates who scaled a prison fence Friday night and allegedly stole a truck near Interstate 64 to aid their getaway.

    State police believe the two men, one of them a convicted murderer, fled to western Kentucky. Search efforts were focused in the Madisonville, Ky., area.

  • Walk for Health program Saturday at Perry Central

    LEOPOLD - A Walk for Health event Saturday at Perry Central Community School will kick off a series of events supporters hope will promote exercise as a key to healthy living.

    Lincoln Hills Resource Conservation and Development Area's education committee, along with the county's Purdue University extension program and YMCA, are hosting four events in Spencer and Perry counties. The Walk For Health events - one walk in the spring and one in the fall of the year in both Spencer and Perry counties - are planned for northern and southern areas of each county. Other events are:

  • Woman rescued from fire 'doing very well'

    TELL CITY - Debbie (McCallister) Howell "is doing very well, considering everything she's been through," according to County Treasurer Martha Wooldridge.

    Howell, who works as a deputy in the treasurer's office, suffered smoke inhalation before being rescued from a burning home at 1034 12th St., Tell City, April 3.

    She called 911 to report the fire and that she was trapped in the basement, and was pulled through one of its windows by firefighters and police officers.

    With new church, Deer Creek Baptist turns new page on congregation's 187 years of history

    A new house of prayer built on an ages-old foundation of faith stirred with joyful hearts Sunday as members of Deer Creek Baptist Church offered thanks to God, one another and their congregation's pioneer founders.

    The Deer Creek congregation is one of the area's oldest, with roots traceable to the earliest days of the county, said Stan Coy of Grandview, a historian who examined the church's records and offered his own retrospective Sunday.
