Cannelton mayor turns to Indiana 15 for third bid

CANNELTON - Cannelton's mayor is turning to another source to help the city obtain a grant to fund repairs to its sewer systems after he announced at a common-council meeting Monday a second attempt had failed.

Mayor Smokey Graves said he received notice last week "that we didn't make the cut," although "the city totally did what they were required to do" in an application submitted in March.

We're going to spend $57,715 and hope for the best.

That was the decision that emerged from a May 29 Perry County Redevelopment Commission meeting.

We understand and appreciate the frustration its members expressed about needing to reroof a courthouse not yet 15 years old. We wish, however, that they'd gone a step beyond merely replacing the shingles.

As we reported Thursday, a couple of members said they didn't want to authorize that work, knowing problems that led to leaks will remain, but felt it was their best option.

Tell City history focus of June, July sessions

TELL CITY - The Tell City-Perry County Public Library Children's Department invites children from 2 years old through fifth grade to participate in its Good Old-Fashioned Summer Reading Program.

Kids may stop in the children's department to pick up reading forms. "Read-to-me" and "Beginning" readers will read 10 picture books, fill out and return a reading form, choose a reading prize, then do it once again.
