  • PC splits games with Paoli

    PAOLI - Perry Central scored seven runs in the last inning to beat Paoli 8-7 in the second game of a junior high girls softball doubleheader Monday.

    Allison Parker had the Commodores' only hit that inning, as they also took advantage of seven walks and one Paoli error.

    Kristi Brumfield drove in two runs for Perry Central in the game with a double and a bases-loaded walk.

    She was also the winning pitcher, teaming with Miranda Claise to pitch a two-hitter.

  • Fire & Ice finishes 4th in Huntingburg tourney

    HUNTINGBURG - Sydney Grass hit .615 to lead Fire & Ice, Tell City's age-16-and-under girls softball travel team, to fourth place in an eight-team tourney last weekend.

    Fire & Ice went 3-2 in the tourney.

    They beat Newburgh Blasters 10-4 and Evansville Thunder 9-0 before losing to the Evansville Stealers 7-6.

    They came back to beat the Evansville Earthquake 10-4 but lost to the Indiana Blasters 5-3.

    Jaci Garrett hit a home run in the first inning against the Newburgh Blasters and another one in the fourth inning against Evansville Thunder.

  • Top three teams win again Monday

    TELL CITY - The top three teams in Tell City's age-13-16 girls softball league continued their winning ways Monday, with Hair Razors raising their record to 8-0 and Sports Acceleration and Swiss Plywood each improving to 6-2.

    Hair Razors beat R&A Sports 20-1 as Miranda Zuelly hit a double and two singles.

    Jaci Garrett added a triple and a double and Cortni Strobel hit two singles.

    No one had more than one hit for R&A.

    Sports Acceleration beat Huber, Goffinet & Hagedorn Law Office 16-2 as Megan Lawalin hit a double and two singles.

  • Tecumseh stops shorthanded TC

    LYNNVILLE - Tecumseh held Tell City to five hits as the Braves swept a Diamond League baseball doubleheader Tuesday.

    Travis Jones had Tell City's only hit in the first game as Tecumseh won 7-1.

    Ben Stiles' ground out drove in Kyle Osborne with Tell City's only run. Osborne reached base by being hit by a pitch.

    Jordan Rhodes pitched the first 32?3 innings for Tell City to take the loss. He gave up six hits and no walks and struck out two.

    Tecumseh won the second game 4-2. Tell City had all four of its hits, including a double by Osborne, in the fourth inning.

  • Franzman's leads Coke by 1 game

    TELL CITY - Franzman Insurance won all three of its games last week to remain undefeated in Tell City Babe Ruth League baseball.

    Coca-Cola won both its game last week to stay just one game behind Franzman's with one loss.

    Those two were scheduled to play each other Tuesday and will meet again Monday, with those games likely deciding the regular-season league champion.

    Franzman's had to survive a close game last Monday, edging Woodcrafters 6-5.

  • Fireman injured battling Boyd Road blaze

    Ball of flames leaves Cannelton VFD member with burns

    BOYD ROAD - A Cannelton volunteer firefighter suffered first- and second-degree burns Friday evening while fighting a blaze on Boyd Road.

    James Robert Lawson was transported to University Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Friday night and was listed in fair condition Wednesday in the hospital's burn unit.

    Cannelton Fire Chief Jerry Harris said Lawson, who was helping carry hoses because he was not wearing protective turnout gear, was hit by a ball of fire that erupted without warning from the home's garage.

  • Moose picnic plans set

    TELL CITY - Perry County's annual Independence Day picnic, sponsored by Moose Lodge 1424, will return to Zoercher-Bettinger Park July 3-5.

    Gene O' Rides will operate rides all three days and the annual fireworks show is scheduled for the night of Friday, July 4.

    Moose members and Women of the Moose will serve chicken and pork-chop dinners all three days.

    A big event Saturday will be a horseshoe tourney, with $300 in prize money. To enter the tourney, call Carman Leistner at 547-2245 or Bill Coyle at 547-7867.

  • River Sweep date changed

    PERRY COUNTY - The annual River Sweep scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to July 19 for Perry County participants due to fluctuations in Ohio River levels.

    The annual riverbank clean-up extends the entire length of the Ohio River and its tributaries. More than 3,000 miles of shoreline is combed for trash and debris each year.
