  • Fire station will host open house, city meetings Mon.

    TELL CITY - The public is invited to tour recent improvements at Tell City's main fire station Monday - and sit in on meetings of two governmental bodies gathering there that evening.

    An open house from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Tell City Fire Station, 12th and Mozart streets, will show off a new kitchen and training room constructed with donations of money and labor, Fire Chief Greg Linne said.

    A brief dedication ceremony is planned for 5:30 p.m.

  • Robbery suspect doesn't make it far

    CANNELTON - A man who allegedly grabbed a wad of cash from a Cannelton convenience store office was quickly nabbed early Monday after a city officer found him in Tell City.

    William Bacon, 26, of 11218 S. 18th Ave., Apartment 301, Tacoma, Wash., faces charges of theft and burglary. He was taken to Perry County Jail and held on $5,500 bail.

  • County property owners receive $537,072 in rebate checks

    TELL CITY - County Auditor Connie Berger has released details about the recent distribution of tax rebates mailed to property owners this month. County property owners received $537,072.19 in rebates, which were intended to provide short-term relief for increases in property taxes. Because of the shift to trending, a process that more closely ties values to market conditions, many Hoosiers saw their tax bills increase and state legislators approved the rebates last year.

  • Inspector issues six city permits

    TELL CITY - Building Inspector Bob Young issued permits for a new home, five electrical upgrades and 10 miscellaneous projects in March. The new-home permit for 1903 14th St. was issued to Joe Glenn for a project valued at $63,000. The electrical upgrades totaled $5,300 with other permits totaling $135,300.

    Young's office collected $630 in fees in March.

    During the month, he also fielded six reports of trash and junk and has received several others so far in April.

  • Deadline nears for personal-property forms

    CANNELTON - The Troy Township Assessor's Office reminds residents of approaching deadlines for filing personal-property forms. These include:

    Form101, Individual Personal Property Return. This form covers all vehicles on which excise taxes are not paid.

    Form 102, Farmers Tangible Personal Property Return. Form covers farm equipment and inventory.

    Form 103, Business Tangible Personal Property Return. Form covers business equipment and inventory.

  • Three people arrested in separate pursuits, police report

    TELL CITY - State and city police arrested two people who allegedly fled from an Indiana State Police trooper Friday night, including a Washington man who allegedly stole several vehicles before being captured early Saturday.

    In a separate case, a man was arrested after he allegedly failed to stop for a trooper on the lookout for the fleeing couple.

    Trooper Heath Carkuff tried to stop a man he believed was acting suspiciously while operating a white Dodge Dakota truck in an alleyway near Sixth and Mozart streets around 12:35 a.m.

  • Hello, future: Sesquicentennial to include time-capsule project

    TELL CITY - A time capsule sealed at the conclusion of Tell City's sesquicentennial this summer will offer a treasure trove of information about today's community to residents living here in 2058.

    Items for the time capsule will be collected through the Aug. 2-9 sesquicentennial celebration and will be opened in 2058, when Tell City will mark its bicentennial.

    The time-capsule project is being sponsored by The Perry County News and Crawford Family Memorials in Tell City.

  • Blaze damages Cannelton business; troopers search fire-damaged home

    PERRY COUNTY - Volunteer firefighters, police officers and in one case, the state fire marshal's office, were summoned to separate fires that damaged a Cannelton bar and a rural home. Both blazes remained under investigation Wednesday.

    Nearly 20 Cannelton firemen were called to Bulldogs Bar and Grill at 221 S. First Street in Cannelton at 11:42 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters found flames coming from the back of the building, which Assistant Chief John Young said is owned by Chip Schulthise and operated by Amber Fulkerson.

    Election to settle contests for two commissioner seats, county council

    TELL CITY - Local voters going to the polls Tuesday will do more than help decide whether the Democratic nominee for president will be Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama - or which Democrat faces incumbent Gov. Mitch Daniels in the fall.

    Perry Countians casting ballots next week will also decide who leads county government over the next four years.
