  • Mayor seeks, accepts street commissioner's resignation

    CANNELTON - Cannelton Street Commissioner Jimmy Maffia has resigned, he told The News Monday.

    "It's political - that's all I can tell you," he said. "I was asked to resign." A misunderstanding developed and "turned political," he added.

    Cannelton Mayor Smokey Graves appointed Maffia to the position during the first common-council meeting of the year. Graves himself won election to his seat in November and began serving in the position as the new year dawned.

  • Boy run over by truck alive but critical

    LILLY DALE - A 4-year-old child is in critical condition at Kosair Children's Hospital, Louisville, Ky., after being run over by a pickup truck at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

  • Drake, Kohnert to speak at ceremony

    TELL CITY - Tell City High School seniors will be the first 2008 Perry County graduates at 7 p.m. Friday in the Bryan Taylor Sports Arena.

    After a welcoming address by the Class of 2008 president, Joseph Kohnert will give the salutatorian speech.

    Valedictorian Alicia Drake will reflect on her school days, congratulate her classmates and acknowledge those who have helped the class along the way after a song from the school's chorus.

    LEOPOLD - The stirring strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" will echo inside the gymnasium walls at Perry Central High School Sunday, where 79 seniors are expected to receive their diplomas during the 2 p.m. commencement ceremony.

    Board member, superintendent doubt legislators' motives

    TELL CITY - Indiana School Boards Association Executive Director Frank Bush said that for the first time in his memory, "legislators on both sides of the (political) aisle said they were lowering property taxes in order to get re-elected," Tell City-Troy Township School Board member Larry Bryant said Monday.

  • Man captured after chase

    TELL CITY - An early-morning chase Monday resulted in the capture of what Tell City's police chief suspects is a homeless man last seen in the Troy area.

    Jeff Schneider, 306 16th St., called police after discovering a man in a car on his property, Chief Greg Hendershot said Monday.

    "When Jeff approached him, he ran," he explained.

  • Graduation brings changes for seniors

    As each Perry County senior receives their diploma this week and next, changes are going to happen. No longer are you high-school students confined to an 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule, a structured life of clubs, sports, school work and other obligations tied to school.

  • PC falls to Rangers

    FERDINAND - Forest Park broke up Perry Central's shutout bid with three runs in the fifth inning and beat the Commodores 6-1 in baseball Friday.

    Perry Central pitcher Wes Linette cruised through the first four innings. But in the fifth the Rangers first three batters singled.

    A bases-loaded walk to the Rangers' cleanup hitter then tied the score 1-1.

    The next batter singled in two runs to put the Rangers ahead for good.

    The Rangers outhit Perry Central 9-6 for the game.

    Lucas Bryant went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Perry Central hitters.
