  • Huber places 3rd in state

    INDIANAPOLIS - Perry Central senior Nick Huber turned in the highest finish by any Perry Countian in 52 years as he placed third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the IHSAA boys state track meet Saturday.

    Huber broke his own school record as he ran that race in 38.62 seconds.

    He did that despite running in the second of three heats. His fastest time of the season would have put him in the fastest heat, among the nine best seeds, but seeds were based on regional times, where Huber was still slowed slightly by an ankle injury.

  • Bobcats win Versailles tourney

    VERSAILLES, Ky. - Six starters hit .500 or better as the Perry County Bobcats age-13 team won a six-team tourney May 17-18.

    The Bobcats beat the Louisville Sharks 8-5 and the Lexington Stars 11-8 in pool play.

    Then in the single-elimination tourney they beat the Louisville Prowlers 8-0 and the Elizabethtown, Ky., A's 8-3 for the title.

    Besides strong hitting, the Bobcats got strong pitching the last two games.

    Austin Kunz pitched a six-inning no-hitter against the Prowlers as the Bobcats won by the 8-run rule.

  • Vikings shut out PC

    ROCKPORT - Braxton Williams and Kent Schmitt combined for all of North Posey's hits as the Vikings beat Perry Central 3-0 in the first round of the South Spencer Class 2A baseball sectional Monday.

    The game was basically a pitching duel between North Posey ace Adam Schroeder and Perry Central's Wes Linette, with North Posey getting four hits and Perry Central two.

    But three of North Posey's hits went for extra bases, and the Vikings also scored two unearned runs thanks to two Perry Central errors.

  • Tell City seniors thank families for support, honor former teacher

    TELL CITY - Flashing lights, cheers and a crowd of family and friends welcomed Tell City High School seniors as they closed one phase of their life and opened another.

    The 114 graduates were led into Bryan Taylor Sports Arena Friday by administration, faculty and staff to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance" played by the Tell City High School band, followed by band Director Barry Reasoner singing the "Star-Spangled Banner."

  • Newly minted Perry Central grads grateful for help on life's highway

    LEOPOLD - With their sought-after high-school diplomas literally within sight, representatives of Perry Central's Class of 2008 tipped their mortarboards Sunday in thanks to parents, teachers and others who helped them reach a major milestone in life's journey. Even the school's cooks received a compliment.

    Five co-valedictorians spoke during the 2 p.m. ceremony in the high-school gymnasium and while each senior had an assigned topic, all touched on the appreciation the 77 seniors felt on graduation day.

  • Linne expects new job to be temporary

    Veteran clerk-treasurer filling duties for now

    TROY - Betty Linne is back in a familiar job, although she hopes to pass on the title and its duties in just a few months.

    The Troy Town Council voted Tuesday to name her the community's clerk-treasurer, filling the vacancy created by the resignation this month of Vicki Tuggle. Linne held the position for 18 years and has remained a deputy clerk for Troy in addition to her duties working in the town's utility office.

  • County asked to foot bills for hurt animals

    TELL CITY - The president of the Humane Society of Perry County, in continuing his effort to get the county to take more responsibility for injured animals, told other animal-welfare workers May 21 he thinks money can be found for that purpose.

    As The News reported May 8, Humane Society President Jim Carter appeared before the county commissioners to urge them to begin helping his organization foot the bills for dogs and cats injured on the county's roads.

    Top Cannelton students plan to study education, criminal justice

    CANNELTON - Ashley Nicole Seifert, daughter of David and Susan Seifert, 4203 E. Indiana 66, will speak on the subject, "Beating the Odds," when she delivers her valedictorian address during Cannelton High School's Class of 2008 commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday in the city's community center.

    She has participated in National Honor Society, student council, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Personal Achievement through Caring and Kindness at School, and Spanish and art clubs.

  • Fountain facelift

    Kris Straneva of Job Coat, Tell City, uses a hand-held jackhammer to remove mortar from the fountain in Tell City's City Hall Park May 22. He and other company employees were stripping a rubber liner and coats of paint before replacing them with a roll-on product they used to refinish the country-club pool last year. It carries a lifetime warranty and the city won't have to chlorinate the water as heavily as in the past because the new liner resists the growth of mold and fungus.

  • Policeman kicked by out-of-control woman

    TELL CITY - A Dubois County woman already on her way to the county jail added battery on a police officer to her list of charges after allegedly kicking a Tell City police sergeant May 18.

    Jeannie D. Rhoads, 37, of 108 Kentucky St., Holland, was arrested by Sgt. Lynn Wooldridge at Days Inn Motel after a dispatcher received a call that Rhoads was out of control and had battered others in the room. Officers said Rhoads refused to follow verbal orders to quit fighting and had to be stopped by an electric stun gun.
