  • Library gearing up for summer reading programs

    Tell City history focus of June, July sessions

    TELL CITY - The Tell City-Perry County Public Library Children's Department invites children from 2 years old through fifth grade to participate in its Good Old-Fashioned Summer Reading Program.

    Kids may stop in the children's department to pick up reading forms. "Read-to-me" and "Beginning" readers will read 10 picture books, fill out and return a reading form, choose a reading prize, then do it once again.

  • Flag Day events scheduled for Saturday in Leopold

    New farmers market kicks off July 5

    LEOPOLD - Several Flag Day events are planned in Leopold Saturday. Perry County's Avenue of Flags, a collection of flag-tipped white crosses honoring men and women from the county killed in military service, will be placed in Leopold Park that day.

    A ceremony honoring their memories is scheduled for 6 p.m.

    Chicken and pork-chop dinners will be sold in the park, with serving beginning at 3 p.m. There will be music in the park by Country Breeze after the 6 p.m. ceremony.

  • TC cleanup week under way

    Dumpsters open to city residents 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday

    TELL CITY - It's time for Tell City residents to clean out those attics, garages and basements and rid themselves of items they no longer want.

    Tell City's annual weeklong cleanup began today and continues through Thursday.

    Miscellaneous items will be picked up on residents' standard trash-pickup day and collected at the same time as bagged trash. No recyclables will be picked up this week and residents' usual weekly trash will still need tags.

    Aquatic organisms have better chance with bigger pipe

    TELL CITY - Humans and other living things will benefit from replacement of a 6-foot culvert near the south end of Tipsaw Lake with one 28 feet in diameter, according to a fisheries biologist for the Hoosier National Forest.

    House Bill 1001 affects economic-development fund

    TELL CITY - County attorney Chris Goffinet told Perry County Redevelopment Commission members at a special meeting May 29 new rules affecting them were included in House Bill 1001, which made significant changes to property taxation.

  • With police on his heels, Evanston man drives truck into Ohio River

    Peters swims to safety, then jailed

    TROY - Joshua Peters' shirt apparently matched his actions Thursday night.

    The 25-year-old Evanston man, whose sleeveless black T-shirt featured the words "Wild Life" and images of two wolves, allegedly led police on a chase over county roads and through newly planted cornfields of Spencer County before driving his pickup truck off Troy's boat ramp into the fast-moving Ohio River. Peters swam to safety and waiting officers but his truck bobbed for a short time and sank.

  • Tell City, Hagedorn settle lawsuit

    Attorney will receive $20,000 from city's insurance carrier

    TELL CITY - A civil lawsuit filed last year against Tell City and two of its police officers has been settled in U.S. District Court.

    Tell City attorney Michael H. Hagedorn will receive $20,000 from Cincinnati Insurance under terms of the settlement signed May 27 by Judge Richard Young. Hagedorn filed his case Aug. 24, naming as defendants the city of Tell City and police-department officers John Allen and Marty Haughee.

  • BREAKING NEWS - Fleeing Evanston man survives, truck sinks in river at Troy

    TROY - An Evanston man led police on a pursuit over county roads and through newly planted cornfields of Spencer County Thursday night before driving his pickup truck into the Ohio River at Troy. The suspect swam to safety and waiting officers but his truck sank in the fast-moving water.

    Joshua D. Peters, 25, who lives at 7796 Indiana 70, faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, criminal recklessness, reckless driving, driving while suspended, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and destruction of evidence.

  • Hair Razors defeats Swiss Plywood in battle for first

    TELL CITY - McKenzie Hayes singled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning as Hair Razors beat Swiss Plywood 7-3 in Tell City age-13-16 girls softball Monday.

    Swiss led 3-2 going into the sixth inning but Hair Razors scored five unearned runs that inning on two hits, two walks and two errors.

    Hair Razors had five hits for the game, with five different batters each getting one single.

    Swiss had four hits, with Stephanie Posey getting a double and a single and Tory Coyle adding two singles. Posey drove in two runs.

  • Franzman Insurance only unbeaten team left

    TELL CITY - Nathan Wood went 4 for 4 as Franzman Insurance beat Coca-Cola 12-0 last Tuesday to become the only remaining undefeated team in the Tell City Babe Ruth League.

    Lucas Bryant added two hits for Franzman's.

    Trent Benningfield and Jeff Braun combined to pitch a two-hitter for Franzman's.

    Dayne Seibert and Chris McDaniel had Coke's only hits.

    Franzman's also beat Kiwanis 16-3 last Thursday and had a 4-0 season record at the end of the week.

    Braun hit a double and two singles in that game. Benningfield and Trent Nelson each added two hits.
