  • Gazebo honors couple's community spirit

    TELL CITY - A new City Hall gazebo dedicated last week honors the memories of a couple who always felt blessed to live in Tell City, their sons said Wednesday.

    The family of the late Charles "Chick" and Virginia Borders stepped forward to acknowledge their sponsorship of the gazebo that hosted its first Schweizer Fest events last week and will serve the community for decades to come.

    Brothers Gene and Bill Borders presented a plaque to Mayor Barbara Ewing naming the structure the Charles and Virginia Borders Colonnade.

  • Should ATVs be used on county roads?

    Commissioner seeks opinions from public

    TELL CITY - People have asked Perry County Commissioner Jody Fortwendel about allowing off-road vehicles to use county roads, and now he's asking county residents what they think.

    Vanderburgh County commissioners adopted an ordinance about a month ago, Fortwendel said during a regular meeting of the Perry County commissioners Wednesday.

    "I have been approached by several people about making it legal for (all-terrain vehicles) to have access to county roads," he said. "I'm asking for input from the public."

  • Tell City latest Hoosier Clean Community

    IDEM designation sets goals for reducing litter, municipal fuel usage

    TELL CITY - Tell City received a special gift for its 150th birthday, one only seven other Hoosier cities and towns can claim.

    Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner Thomas Easterly was on hand in City Hall Park Wednesday to present a plaque and commemorative road sign to Mayor Barbara Ewing and Councilman Tony Hollinden, who spearheaded an effort to have the city designated an Indiana Clean Community.

    By rail, river and road

    Passenger-train travel returned to Tell City last week as the community's sesquicentennial offered rail excursions to Troy and back, Ohio River cruises on the Spirit of Jefferson and guided trolley tours of historic points of interest. The weeklong celebration of the 150th anniversary of Tell City's founding by Swiss and German immigrants wrapped up Sunday. Watch for more photos Thursday.

  • Convicted murderer gets life sentence

    Kiplinger not eligible for parole, offers apology

    TELL CITY - Kyle S. Kiplinger, convicted last month in the August 2006 murder of Bobbi Jo Braunecker, will spend the rest of his life in prison.

    In sentencing the 24-year-old Tell City man Friday morning, Circuit Judge Lucy Goffinet said she put little faith in Kiplinger's last-minute apology to Braunecker's relatives, who gathered in the county's courtroom two years after the woman's body was found floating in the Ohio River.

  • Family-support group to meet

    TELL CITY - Soldiers' family members and the general public are invited to attend the next meeting of the family-readiness group supporting Tell City-based soldiers, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the armory.

    The group's meetings include discussions of issues faced by spouses separated by military deployment. At a July 31 meeting, for example, county Veterans Services Officer Wayne Hubert told attendees a family-relief fund can help those experiencing trouble paying "any expenses related to having your soldier activated."

  • TCHS selling tickets

    TELL CITY - Tell City High School is selling football and volleyball season tickets and all-sports passes in the athletic office.

    Football season tickets are $40 for reserved seats and $20 for non-reserved. Volleyball season tickets are $30.

    All-sports passes, good for all regular-season athletic events at the high school in the upcoming school year, are $60 for adults, $40 for students, and $175 for an entire family.

    TELL CITY - Tee times begin at 7 a.m. for the annual golf open at Hoosier Heights Country Club. Only 120 golfers will be accepted and cost is $75 for non-members and $65 for members.
