  • Perry County woman makes 471-mile ride

    DES MOINES, Iowa - For years Earlene Preher of Leopold was one of the top distance runners in Perry County, winning several road races.

    But a knee injury a few years ago made her unable to continue her running career, so she started focusing more on bicycling. "Bicycling doesn't bother my knee one bit," she said.

    Two years ago while on vacation in Arizona she read a newspaper article about an annual bicycle ride across Iowa sponsored by a Des Moines paper, the Register.

  • Programs at Rickenbaugh House

    PERRY COUNTY - Hoosier National Forest officials have scheduled two interpretive programs at the Rickenbaugh House.

    Fights in the Forest begins at 7 p.m. Saturday and will show attendees predators and their prey.

    Looking Forward to Fall will touch base on the upcoming seasonal changes at 7 p.m. Aug. 23.

  • Presentation rescheduled for Sept. 9

    TELL CITY - The Dolly Parton Imagination Library presentation has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Schergens Center.

    The library is a nationwide literacy program started in 1995. The United Way of Perry County is hosting the event and reservations are due by Sept. 1.

  • Hill representative to be at NARFE meeting

    JASPER - Adam Dickey, Baron Hill's field representative, will be the guest speaker for Wednesday's meeting of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association in Jasper.

    Also attending will be the area NARFE Vice President Paul Johnson.

    The meeting is at the Schnitzelbank Restaurant, starting with lunch at noon EDT with Dickey speaking at 1 p.m. and the business meeting will follow.

    Active federal employees and all spouses are invited.

  • Schweizer Fest Street-Car Parade winners

    TELL CITY - Winners in the Aug. 3 C have been announced by Hauenstein's Mens Wear. There were 43 floats and 74 participants in this year's street-car parade, a record.

    Ages 4 years and younger

    First place, Alyssa and Cameron Howell; second place, Avery Vaught; third place, Cole and Blake Hess.

    Ages 5 to 7

    First place, Kelsey and Logan Marshall; second place, Dax Huff; third place, Devon and Jayden Casebolt.
