  • City Hall honors 'If I Were Mayor' winners

    TELL CITY - Recognition of the changes Tell City's youth would like to see in their hometown, and citizens' pride in their community, led the special session of the city's June 16 common council meeting.

    Tell City Mayor Barbara Ewing awarded two Tell City Junior High School students prizes for their entries in an If I Were Mayor Contest. Brennan Malone won first place with his essay that said he wants to "create bright ideas for the future" and make the city look better so "citizens would be proud to call Tell City their hometown."

  • Kiplinger trial could last two weeks

    TELL CITY - Perry Countians' circuit-court judge, their prosecutor and a bailiff are preparing for the murder trial of Kyle S. Kiplinger, in what could be a two-week commute to English.

    Jury selection is expected to begin July 7 in Crawford Circuit Court. Kiplinger, charged with the August 2006 death of Cannelton resident Bobbi Jo Braunecker, faces a possibility of life in prison if convicted.

  • State releases funds to counties early

    Local coffer expecting $1.1 million

    INDIANAPOLIS - Gov. Mitch Daniels said in a news release June 20 the state will advance $620 million of 2008 homestead credits to Indiana counties, in most cases months ahead of schedule.

    Perry County Auditor Connie Berger said Tuesday the notification represented a reversal of what she was told previously, that the money would be provided after counties sent out tax bills. According to an April 29 memo from state officials, she explained, Perry County's share of the money will be $1,130,346.

  • Moose picnic returns with food, fun, fireworks

    Rides kick off Wednesday evening; chicken, pork-chop dinners begin Thursday

    TELL CITY - Moose Lodge 1424's annual Independence Day picnic will mark the holiday in grand style this week with rides, games, food and a big fireworks show Friday night.

    Fans of amusement rides can begin their celebration a day early as some attractions will open Wednesday evening in Zoercher-Bettinger Park.

    Picnic events kick into full gear Thursday with meals, booths and entertainment daily through Saturday.

  • Garrett's hitting helps all-stars win two games

    HUNTINGBURG - Allicyn Garrett hit .667 as Tell City's age-13-14 all-stars went 2-1 in a 13-team age-14-and-under girls softball tourney last weekend.

    Tell City won its two pool games Saturday, beating Bloomington Lightning 11-9 and Indiana Stingers of Evansville 11-8.

    The tourney was then divided into two single-elimination brackets, with Tell City in the bracket for the top seven teams.

  • Swimmers cut times to take another trophy

    HUNTINGBURG - With the team's second trophy finish in the last two weekends, Tell City Swim Club Typhoons Coach Jeff Simpson said he's "very proud of what we've been able to do in the last couple of meets."

    Last weekend the club was at Huntingburg and finished third overall. "Our swimmers dropped a lot of time and did very well," he said. "Bailey Malone dropped a lot of time and finished very well for us. She did a good job and helped us secure the third-place finish."

  • PC girls tie one softball game, lose three to Crawford County

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central Junior High girls tied one and lost another softball game at home against Crawford County Saturday, then lost two more on that team's field the following Monday.

    Kristy Brumfield pitched the entire first Saturday game, which stopped when time expired at five innings with each team holding six runs, according to Coach Greg Gibson. Brumfield struck out five batters, walked four and gave up two hits, he said.

    Brumfield, Hannah Harpenau and Sydney Goffinet each got two hits. Harpenau reached second base on one of them, and the others were singles.

  • Tell City earns two firsts, one second in weekend matches

    TELL CITY - Tell City's 8U and 12U teams took first places in an all-star softball tourney last weekend while 10U members placed second.

    Excellent Defense

    In the 8U games, coach David Sanders said the team played excellent defense overall and hit the ball well, with the team batting average at .527 for the tourney. In Game 1 against Tell City's 7U team, the girls won 9-4, with Emily Hagedorn and Breanna Bryant hitting 2-for-2 and Katelyn Hughes and Savannah Alvey hitting 2-for-3 against the pitching machine. Rachael Malone and Hughes each got two runs.

  • TC splits double-header in Diamond League play

    Marksmen play 'our best night,' coach says

    TELL CITY - "I thought we made many fundamental errors in the first game, a lot of basic mistakes," Jasper Coach Andy Noblitt said after a Diamond League Baseball double-header at Tell City Tuesday. "We did not do that the second game. I thought we played much better fundamentally, doing what we normally do, and the kids were able to salvage Game 2."

    Tell City topped Jasper 8-3 in Game 1, then lost to Noblitt's team 6-5.

  • Up, up and not so far away

    Touchstone Energy's balloon offered low-level tethered rides at Friday evening's annual meeting of Southern Indiana Power. A huge crowed packed the county fairgrounds for a picnic meal, bingo and balloon rides. Emily Hagedorn was an early passenger.
