  • Bank seeks foreclosure on school building

    Superintendent says lawsuit filed in error; lawyer disagrees

    CANNELTON - A mortgage-foreclosure lawsuit against the Cannelton City Schools Corp. reported in The News' records section Aug. 4 was filed in error and won't go forward, according to Schools Superintendent Al Chapman.

    A complaint filed July 15 in Perry Circuit Court by Fifth Third Bank alleges the school corporation failed to make required payments on a debt that stood at $61,325 as of July 9 for a mortgage on property at Fifth and Washington streets.

  • Officers moving to 12-hour schedule

    Police chief asks for impound fee on towed vehicles

    TELL CITY - A day's work will soon require extra hours from Tell City's patrolmen.

    The city's board of public works and safety gave its blessing Monday to a police-department request for 12-hour shifts, giving Chief Greg Hendershot the authority to begin the longer tours of duty in early September - and to revert back to eight-hour shifts if the new scheduling system doesn't work.

  • Commissioners propose 5-percent pay hikes

    Officials approve $94,900 appraisal-services contract

    TELL CITY - Perry County commissioners approved at a regular meeting Aug. 6 a recommendation to give county employees a 5-percent raise next year, the same percentage approved the last several years, according to County Auditor Connie Berger.

    The county council is responsible for developing the budget each year, and makes final decisions about employee pay increases.

  • Tell City turns 150

    Top photo, the Linda Smith Band filled the Brau Garten Thursday night, the second of four evenings of live entertainment scheduled for Tell City's sesquicentennial Schweizer Fest. Other bands played gospel, country and other styles of music. A new gazebo dedicated last week in honor of Charles and Virginia Borders provided the backdrop for events in the park.

  • Work planned for 12th Street

    TELL CITY - No-parking signs are already up along 12th Street as Gohmann Asphalt and Construction readies to mill existing asphalt and then repave a stretch of Indiana 66 that serves as 12th Street in Tell City. Mayor Barbara Ewing said milling of the existing surface will begin Friday morning from the intersection of Indiana 37 (Payne Street) and will continue south to Washington Street. Repaving will get under way Monday.

  • Woman injured in hit-and-run incident

    UNIONTOWN - Indiana State Police from the Jasper post are asking the public's help in their investigation into an early-morning incident Aug. 7 that sent one person to the hospital.

    A preliminary investigation reveals that around 12:48 a.m., troopers were dispatched to Campton Road off Indiana 145 near Uniontown for a personal-injury accident. When troopers arrived, they were led to area on private property where Janel M. Buschkoetter, 18, of Jasper had been run over and dragged down the roadway.

  • Turning bad decisions into hope

    I've seen too many men and women arrested, sentenced and carted off to prison not to know the dangers of bad decisions. I've seen them from a distance, and up close.

    I've known people, some friends, who died of drug overdoses, were torn to pieces in accidents because of drugs and alcohol or contracted AIDS due to risky behavior.

    But I've also seen people's lives redeemed, turned around and made better. The road to despair has a turn-around lane.

  • Thanks for making Schweizer Fest a success

    It's over. Two years of planning and hard work by numerous committees and organizations have come to an end.

    This year's 50th annual Schweizer Fest and sesquicentennial are sure to be talked about even 50 years from now for the city's 200th birthday, just as the events of 1958 are still talked about today. When the centennial celebration came to an end 50 years ago, Schweizer Fest was born and each year afterward, the city has been reminded of what makes Tell City the place it is today. This year was no exception with numerous events dedicated to its founding.

  • Memories of former classmates

    Class reunions can create ambivalence in one's feelings. What is the emotional situation? Is the reunion a celebration of our longevity? Is the reunion a memorial for those not with us?

    It is hard for the mind to entertain two ideas at the same time, especially life and death. The most typical response when presented with a dilemma is to choose one alternative and defy a satisfactory solution to the emotional situation. Life and death are a kind of divine conflict - a dilemma to be solved if one is to become complete.
