  • 'Wolf-dog' still undergoing examination

    PERRY COUNTY - A dog thought to be part wolf and involved in an attack on a local family's pet is still undergoing preliminary steps necessary before testing can be performed to determine its species, according to a biologist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

    Jeff Thompson said last week a university professor has the animal, which was among five killed after they attacked in May a Jack Russel-Yorkshire terrier mix owned by a family residing on Old Indiana 37 near Gatchel.

  • Courthouse extends hours for tax payments

    PERRY COUNTY - Property owners will need to pay the first installment of their property taxes by Aug. 22 with the balance due Nov. 10.

    Property owners have several payment options.

    Old National and First State banks in Tell City and Rockport and Fifth Third Bank in Tell City will collect payments, as will the treasurer's office at the county courthouse.

    Property owners can mail payments to the Perry County Treasurer, P.O. Box 756, Tell City, IN 47586. Mailed payments must be postmarked by Aug. 22 and Nov. 10 to avoid penalties.

  • Bass tourney coming to Rocky Point Aug. 24

    ROCKY POINT - Hoosier Open Tournaments Inc. is hosting a team bass tourney on the Ohio River Sunday at Rocky Point.

    Entry fee is $200 per two-person team. No membership is required. Teams may register at Rocky Point Marina from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday but must pay an additional $20 fee.

  • Support group plans events

    TELL CITY - Members of the family-readiness group supporting Tell City-based soldiers will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 to continue making plans for a Sept. 11 candlelight vigil, according to Lisa Baughman, chairwoman. She said child care and refreshments will be available at the meeting.

    The group will also staff a table at a Dale Fall Festival Sept. 5 and 6 to provide information about what Baughman described as "a new beginning" for the group.

    Wanda Underhill, secretary, stressed that the FRG "isn't just about the military, but is for the whole community."

  • Proposed resource center would serve whole community

    TELL CITY - A community resource center could be on the horizon to help those in need in Perry County.

    Beginning in late April, the 4Community2 partners gathered to discuss how to better serve the Perry County community.

    The partners include United Way of Perry County, Catholic Charities, Perry County Memorial Hospital, Lincoln Hills Development Corp. and Perry County Community Foundation.

  • Sprinkle scores in three events at state

    COLUMBUS - Emily Sprinkle of the Tell City Swim Club scored in three events at the Indiana age-group long-course state championships Aug. 1-3.

    Sprinkle placed 10th in the age-10-and-under girls 50-meter backstroke in 41.13 seconds, 72 hundredths of a second better than her previous best.

    She placed 12th in the 50 free in 33.93 and 16th in the 200 free in 2:45.36.

    She scored 13 points in those three events combined.

    She just missed scoring in her other two events, finishing 19th in the 50 butterfly in 39.13 and 20th in the 100 back in 1:29.88.

  • Kashyab double winner in Schweizer Fest tourney

    TELL CITY - Anjan Kashyab was a double winner in the Schweizer Fest tennis tourney last weekend.

    Kashyab, a Tell City eighth grader, won the age-14-and-under and 16-U boys singles titles.

    He and 2008 Tell City graduate Sean Risse placed second in men's doubles.

    Scott Saalman and Phil Knust of Jasper won the men's doubles title. Saalman is a 1983 Tell City graduate.

    Besides Kashyab, the only winners from Tell City were Andy Chinn and Bethany Peter, who took the mixed doubles title.

  • Hollinden 2nd in six-mile road race

    TELL CITY - Tell City boys cross country coach Chris Hollinden was the highest Perry County finisher in the Schweizer Fest road races Saturday.

    Hollinden placed second in the six-mile run in 32:37.48.

    That was just 7.48 seconds slower than his second-place time of last year but was 39.58 seconds behind winner Jeremy Kemper, a former cross country teammate of Hollinden at the University of Evansville.

    Forest Park cross country runner Ali Cooper won the women's six-mile title and finished 41st overall in 42:03.68.

  • Lassaline wins Schweizer Fest golf title

    TELL CITY - Erik Lassaline held off two former champions to win his first Schweizer Fest Golf Open title Sunday.

    Lassaline, a 1983 Tell City graduate who won the Big Eight Conference tourney in 1982, had been close to the top spot in the Schweizer Fest tourney several times.

    He placed second in 1997, '98 and 2000, third in 1987 and '88, fourth in 2001 and '05, and fifth in 2002.

    But this year he shot an even-par 142 to finish one stroke ahead of two-time champion Mark Flannagan and five-time champion John Stiles.
