  • Skillman to speak at GOP picnic

    SPENCER COUNTY - Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman will be the guest of honor at the Perry-Spencer Republican Picnic July 24 at Mulzer's Camp west of Troy.

    Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the meal at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for students with children 6 and younger free. The public is invited.

  • Baumeister honored for years of service

    TELL CITY - A police officer who worked 20 years before being sidelined by health issues was honored Monday for his service to Tell City.

    Charlie Baumeister began work as a patrolman in 1986 and was the community's Drug Abuse Resistance Education Officer for many years. He left active duty in 2006 and recently indicated to the city that he did not plan to return as a patrolman.

    Mayor Barbara Ewing said Baumeister was a valued police-department and community partner who cared for the city and its residents.

  • New library software limits computer time, aids print jobs

    TELL CITY - Tell City-Perry County Public Library patrons who use the computer lab will see some changes in the coming months. The board decided at its July 2 meeting to install PC-Cop, a print-management software.

    Library Director Larry Oathout told members that he is proposing installing the $6,000 software on the 22 computers in the computer lab. Patrons would be able to access the computers using barcodes from their library cards and a personal-identification number, allowing them computer access for two hours per day.

  • 4-H'ers big week under way

    PERRY COUNTY - A noon ceremony Wednesday officially opened this year's Perry County 4-H Fair, with activities and exhibits open to the public through Saturday evening. Livestock-judging events that began yesterday afternoon continue today with evening swine and beef shows.

    Friday brings the annual livestock auction and motocross racing with Saturday's schedule packed with a dressed-pet parade, pig-wrestling competition, mechanical bull rides and rodeo and demolition derby.

  • Superintendent announces 2009 retirement

    Board appoints DeSpain administrative assistant

    TELL CITY - Tell City-Troy Township School Corp. will soon begin looking for a new superintendent after Ron Etienne announced during Tuesday's school-board meeting he would retire next year.

    Etienne came out of retirement in 2004 to take over the school's superintendent position left open by Larry Phillips. Originally, Etienne told board members, he only planned to be with the corporation for a few months to deal with the budget, but has now been there for almost four years.

  • Glenn returns to Tell City's police force

    Drivers to see reduced wait times at Main Street stoplights

    TELL CITY - Tell City's newest full-time police officer won't need much of an orientation when she begins work later this summer.

    Heather Glenn was appointed by the Tell City Board of Public Works and Safety Monday to fill the vacancy created by the retirement early this year of Police Chief David Faulkenberg.

  • Jurors to decide Kiplinger's role in slaying

    Confessed murderer O'Brien may testify about night Bobbi Jo Braunecker was killed

    ENGLISH - Two women who saw Kyle Kiplinger and Darrick O'Brien the night they allegedly murdered Bobbi Jo Braunecker in August 2006 testified Tuesday that both men had changed clothes and appeared wet after returning from what was supposed to be a quick nighttime trip to Wal-Mart.

  • Tax deadline set

    PERRY COUNTY - Perry County Auditor Connie Berger and Perry County Treasurer Martha Wooldridge have received approval from the Department of Local Government Finance for an Aug. 22, 2008, tax deadline.

    Tax bills will be mailed to property owners around the end of July.

  • Home-schooling curriculum should be standardized

    In February a California state appeals court ruled that unless parents have recognized teaching credentials they cannot home-school their kids.

    The court's opinion, citing a state education law, said, "Parents do not have a constitutional right to home-school their children."

    Advocates of home-schooling responded strongly against the ruling.
