  • Tell City beats state's No. 2 for tourney title

    TELL CITY - Trent Rainey hit .933 with five home runs as Tell City's age-10 baseball all-stars won the Bloomington Invitational last weekend.

    Tell City went undefeated in the six-team tourney, winning all three of its pool games and then going 2-0 in the single-elimination bracket.

    Tell City beat the Edgewood Chaos 10-9 for the title as Rainey went 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the first inning.

    Eli Stewart also had three hits and Reed Goffinet and Hunter Rowe each added two.

    Rainey pitched three innings that game, striking out eight.

  • County leaders reappoint 3 redevelopment officials

    School board gets advisory seat; county council will pick 2 more

    TELL CITY - Perry County commissioners voted in a regular meeting Monday to reappoint three current members of the county's redevelopment commission as their designees to that body to comply with a new mandate imposed by House Enrolled Act 1001.

  • Leopold field day

    Tuesday's No-Till Field Day and picnic sponsored by the Perry County Soil and Water Conservation District drew visitors to Randy and Teresa Rennie's farm near Leopold. Jim Kaiser, a retired University of Illinois extension specialist, spoke on pasture and livestock management. Other topics for discussion were various tillage options available to farmers, soil stewardship and alternative crops.

  • City council vacates street

    Resident fears action would affect emergency access

    CANNELTON - Despite a protest from an adjacent landowner, Cannelton Common Council members voted in a public hearing July 14 to vacate a portion of the city's Richardson Street.

    "My concern is the people living above me," said George Markline, who resides at 15 Clifton Heights. "If something happens, fire equipment can't get to them or they can't get out. There are kids up there, plus adults. I fear for the safety of children and adults if something should happen."

  • 'Boot camp' turns Cannelton students on to technology

    Cannelton School Board reorganizes, welcomes new member

    CANNELTON - One student decided she wants to attend Vincennes University and two others "said they definitely want to go into engineering" after attending a technology-and-robotics "boot camp" at the southwestern-Indiana school, Principal Ginger Conrad said July 16.

    Five participated in the week-long camp, sponsored by the Southwest Indiana Network for Education, she explained during a regular school-board meeting.

  • Old World song, Hoosier wines to spice up festival's final day

    A community known for its love of beer will welcome some of the state's top wineries Saturday, Aug. 9, for an afternoon of tastings in City Hall Park.

    Making a sesquicentennial visit the same day will be an Indiana band well known for its Bavarian tunes.

    Five wineries, including Winzerwald in Perry County, will be pouring tastes and selling wines to take home in a wine garden located in the park from noon to 6 p.m.

  • Calling all BBQ chefs

    TELL CITY - There are less than two weeks left to join in on the fun and competition for the sesquicentennial and Schweizer Fest barbecue cook-off to be held in Tell City's City Hall Park Saturday, Aug. 2.

    Bring family and friends and enjoy a morning of grilling. Meats are provided free of charge but there is a $10 entry fee.

    Cash prizes will be awarded, followed by a community picnic.

    The cook-off, community picnic and other opening-day events are sponsored by ThyssenKrupp Waupaca.
