  • Smitty's regular-season champ 13th year in row

    TELL CITY - Smitty's Memorial Team won the regular-season title in the Tell City Women's Softball League for the 13th year in row, breaking the previous record of 12 in a row set by Citizens National Bank 1984-95.

    Smitty's finished the regular season 8-0 but did not clinch the title until the final game of the season July 17, when it beat Coca-Cola 12-6. Coke entered that game with only one loss.

    Candy Jarboe, Tammy Litherland, Kim Brown and Amber Thomas each had three of Smitty's 23 hits that game.

    Melissa Hahus added a triple and a single.

  • Smitty's rallies in 8th to beat Coke for title

    TELL CITY - Smitty's Memorial Team rallied for five runs in the top of the eighth inning and beat Coca-Cola 14-9 to win the Tell City Women's Softball League playoff tourney Thursday.

    Coke scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. Amie Owen singled, Jennifer Stowe doubled, and Amber Hanan singled to produce those runs.

    Smitty's came back with consecutive hits by Lauren Goffinet, Candy Jarboe and Krystal Lawalin to start the eighth inning.

    Tammy Litherland followed with a sacrifice fly to put Smitty's up 11-9.

  • Collins, Meek shoot 12 under to win scramble

    TELL CITY - Kim Collins and Jane Meek shot an apparent-tourney-record 12-under-par 64 to win the Hoosier Heights Country Club Ladies Golf Invitational scramble Tuesday.

    They scored eagles on the seventh, 14th and 17th holes and just missed a 3 1/2 foot putt for another eagle.

    They finished eight strokes ahead of runners-up June Cline and Martha Luckett of Owensboro, Ky.

    Greta Shelton and Pauline Payne of Owensboro won the net (with handicaps figured) title with 55.

    A total of 24 two-woman teams competed in the tourney.

  • Skillman pledges issues-oriented campaign

    Lt. governor rallies support for local GOP candidates

    TROY - Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman pledged Thursday that the upcoming race for Indiana governor will be one based on ideas for the state's future. Speaking to local Republicans in Spencer County, Skillman said Hoosiers have made gains on several fronts since she and Gov. Mitch Daniels took office in 2005.

    "We look forward to a discussion about our state. This will be a campaign that is all positive - and about the future," she said.

  • Indiana 145 to close for resurfacing and pipe replacements

    PERRY COUNTY - Indiana 145 in Perry County between Indiana 37 and Indiana 62 will close today for about two weeks.

    The closure will allow for a resurfacing, pipe replacement and slide repair project that was awarded in January to Gohmann Asphalt and Construction of Clarksville.

    Local traffic will have access to the point of closure. However, through traffic will not be allowed. Residents along the corridor will have access to their driveways.

  • Family struggles in fire's aftermath

    TELL CITY - Tom and Chrissy Kellems lost many of their belongings July 18 when fire destroyed a storage building behind their home on 13th Street. Lost were a bicycle belonging to the couple's 6-year-old son, Gary, and Christmas gifts given to him and 9-year-old Bianca. A moped Tom Kellems used to get to and from work also burned.

  • Lincoln Trail sells quilt chances

    TELL CITY - The Lincoln Trail Quilt Guild is selling chances for a red and white quilt Aug. 8 and 9 during Schweizer Fest at Evangelical United Church of Christ.

    The quilt will be on display during a quilt show and is expected to be finished by the February 2009 drawing. Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.

  • Don't fall prey to fraudulent calls

    PERRY COUNTY - A local woman lost several hundred dollars in a scam involving her debit card.

    The woman received an automated call on her cell phone reporting that her card had been suspended and that she needed to call a number to have it reactivated.

    Thinking the message was valid, she called and was guided through an automated system to input her debit-card number and personal identification number. Much of the money in the account was quickly withdrawn.

    Recipients of such calls should not respond to them and should never provide banking-account information.

    TELL CITY - Frederick Sheet Metal will be honored during the annual Schweizer Fest Testimonial Dinner Aug. 7.

    A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Tell City Knights of Columbus Council 1172.
