  • Commissioners opt to spend money to recover money

    County leaders decline terrorism-insurance coverage

    TELL CITY - Perry County commissioners agreed at a regular meeting Monday to spend $3,420 to recoup approximately $27,000 next year.

    They approved the renewal of a three-year contract with Malinowski Consulting Inc. of Carmel to recover "indirect costs" associated with certain grant programs.

    Founder Charles Malinowski said in a proposal letter to the commissioners the county operates a number of grant programs for which state and federal agencies provide reimbursement.

  • First human West Nile case reported here

    Patient from Perry County recovering after contracting virus; simple steps reduce your risk

    TELL CITY - Perry County is home to the state's first human case of West Nile virus in 2008. State health officials Wednesday confirmed a probable human case of the virus in the county. They encourage residents to take basic precautions that can limit their exposure to the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

  • Open house at hospital Saturday

    TELL CITY - Perry County Memorial Hospital will host an open house from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The free event is geared toward family health. Free health screenings, demonstrations, health equipment displays, door prizes, low-calorie snacks and recipes will be available.

  • High-school parking lot could be closed at night

    TELL CITY - Tell City-Troy Township School Corp. officials are again looking at closing Tell City High School parking areas to people who converge there at night.

    A banner in front of the building advertised a Tell City High School all-class reunion Aug. 2, "but the parking lot was an absolute disaster on that Saturday morning," school-board member Larry Bryant noted during a regular meeting Aug. 12.

  • VX: Deadly to the last drop

    The last drops of 1,269 tons of a deadly nerve agent were destroyed at the Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility Aug. 8. This is a signal achievement for the workers at Newport, the community and our national security.

    Plans for destroying VX gas (which contracts of all the muscles in the body, including the diaphragm, causing death by asphyxiation) at Newport began more than 20 years ago. Throughout the years, I supported the Army funds for research and development of the best and safest way to get rid of the VX.

  • Sandage to run at UE

    TELL CITY - Spencer Sandage, a 2008 Tell City graduate, announced Friday that he will continue his cross country and track careers for the University of Evansville.

    Sandage looked at running for Bellarmine University but then decided to attend UE.

    "I applied to the school and then he (UE cross country and track coach Don Walters) contacted me," said Sandage.

    Walters wanted Sandage on his cross country team and was prepared to offer a partial athletic scholarship.

    But "they'd already given me as much as they could, with academic and other aid," said Sandage.

  • High school soccer is new sport in Tell City

    When fall high school sports make their season debut in Perry County this week, there will be a new sport on the block - soccer at Tell City.

    Officially it is a junior varsity sport for its first two years, with the Tell City-Troy Township school board to then decide if there is enough interest to promote it to varsity status.

    So the Marksmen won't play in a sectional this year or next and will play mostly junior varsity opponents.

  • Increased depth should help Tell City girls team

    TELL CITY - More depth should help Tell City's girls golf team this year.

    The Marksmen have eight girls on their roster, the most in eight years.

    Last year they started the season with five girls and had only three - one short of the requirement for a team score - compete in the PAC and sectional matches.

    All three of those players return, including senior Amber Thomas, a fourth-year starter.

    She shot a season-best 42 against Bosse at Evansville's Fendrich course last year.
