    Chapman predicts lower taxes next year

    CANNELTON - The immediate financial future remains rocky, but Cannelton Superintendent of Schools Al Chapman said Thursday the imminent arrival of tax revenues, a proposed bond sale and changes in state funding promise to bring stability - and perhaps even prosperity - in 2009.

    Uncertainties in the school system's fiscal picture were evidenced by questions board member Christal Moskos posed in looking at the financial report Chapman provided at a regular board meeting.

  • City obliged to abide by Corps' rules for levee

    Fourth Street residents worried they may lose use of backyards

    TELL CITY - A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report will require Tell City to remove a gravel roadway and trees inspectors said are too close to an earthen levee that has protected the community from floodwaters for more than 60 years.

    The levee, which ties into the city's concrete floodwall along Fourth Street, is inspected regularly by the Corps and a review carried out in April pointed out "significant maintenance deficiencies" the city will have to address in the coming year.

  • Cannelton's 7th Street to undergo major overhaul

    Discussions result in project extension

    CANNELTON - The Indiana Department of Transportation has agreed to perform more improvements to Indiana 66 through Cannelton than they originally planned, according to the city's mayor.

    Smokey Graves said at a city-council meeting Aug. 11 INDOT now plans to improve the highway from the McDonald's restaurant in Tell City to the Patio Steak House between the two cities.

  • Perry Central aiming for two sectional titles

    LEOPOLD - Until 2006 Perry Central had never won a cross country sectional title. Now the Commodore boys have won two in a row and are favored to make it three in a row this year.

    They start the season ranked 15th in the state by IndianaRunner.com. New Albany, ranked 22nd, is the only other team from the southern fourth of the state ranked in the top 30.

    So the secret seems to be out about Perry Central's boys team. But Coach Jason Barnett thinks the Commodore girls can sneak up on some opponents and also win the Jasper sectional this year.

  • Perry Central team will feature big line

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central's football team graduated probably its three fastest players last year, including a running back who gained more than 4,500 yards in the past two years.

    But Coach Mike Spencer thinks the Commodores will "still be fairly quick." And with a big line, including 6-foot-4, 400-pound all-state tackle Robbie Piper, "I think we'll be able to run the football," said Spencer.

  • Tell City outdigs Evansville North

    TELL CITY - Julie Davis, Katie Kalin and Paige Gelarden each made 10 digs as Tell City beat Evansville North 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 in a season-opening volleyball match Monday.

    Tell City built huge leads early in the first game (10-2) and third game (11-3) and controlled those games the rest of the way.

    The Marksmen also led most of the second game, though North narrowed their 20-15 lead to 23-22 on some bad returns by the Marksmen.

    Tell City then scored a point on a North side out, though, and scored the final point on a Leslie Poole serve that North failed to return.

  • PC's serving, spiking beat Bulldogs

    LEOPOLD - Hot serving streaks by Kyla Edwards and Sloan Harpenau helped Perry Central beat Cannelton 25-12, 25-11, 25-20 in volleyball Tuesday.

    The Commodores also got some timely hitting from Megan Hedinger and Jessica Huber, with both getting some kills off good sets and some free balls.

    Cannelton led 6-2 in the first game after Nakaa Myers served five consecutive points.

    But Perry Central then scored a point on a side out.

    Edwards followed by serving 10 consecutive points before a well placed dink by Cannelton's Jaci Garrett ended her serving turn.

  • Football Marksmen feature young, inexperienced team

    TELL CITY - Tell City's football team graduated 14 seniors from last year's 5-6 team, including nine two-way starters.

    Thus the Marksmen are left with little experience this year. They have only six seniors on their 43-player roster. And only one of those seniors, Andy Carter, earned a varsity letter last year.

    There are six lettermen on the team. A sophomore, running back Trent Gunn, is probably the most experienced player on the team.

    He rushed for about 950 yards as a freshman, including 196 yards in a first-round sectional win over Sullivan.

  • State association recognizes Eagles Bluff Park project

    CANNELTON - The Perry County Parks and Recreation Board will receive a County Achievement Award from the Association of Indiana Counties Sept. 24 for its work in getting a restroom building and visitors center built at Eagles Bluff Park overlooking the Cannelton Locks and Dam.

    The award will be presented at the AIC's annual conference at the Belterra Casino Resort in Florence, Ind., Sept. 24.

    "This is no small thing," said Parks Board President Edd Ransom at the board's monthly meeting Aug. 13. He noted it is the only such award being presented by the AIC this year.
