  • Chamber to honor county public schools at annual membership dinner

    SPENCER COUNTY – The Spencer County Regional Chamber of Commerce has chosen “Celebration of Education: A Key to our Future Success” as the theme for this year’s annual membership dinner.

    The event is set for Jan. 24, beginning with a 5 p.m. social time with dinner at 6:30. The event will be held in the Celebration Room at Santa’s Lodge and Convention Center.

  • Crawford County deputy injured after self-inflicted gunshot wound

    CRAWFORD COUNTY – State police said a Crawford County sheriff’s deputy was injured Friday morning from a self-inflicted gundshot wound.

    Troopers received a a call at 2:30 a.m. EST that a a deputy was found shot inside his home near English. State police said Deputy Jesse Belcher, 26, finished his shift Thursday night at 10 p.m. and was at home. Sometime between 1:30 and 2 a.m., Belcher called another Crawford County deputy and after talking for a few minutes he hung up.

  • Cannelton 5th-graders help animals at shelter

    Cannelton fifth-graders delivered Dec. 20 items and money raised in a school-wide fundraiser for the Perry County Animal Shelter.

    Items included dog and cat toys and treats, collars and bedding, and money totaled more than $130.

    After delivering the items, the students enjoyed visiting the dogs and cats up for adoption. (Click photo to enlarge.)

  • Perry Central schedules continuing-ed class

    LEOPOLD – Perry Central will host a series of continuing-education classes, beginning at the end of the month.

    There will be a variety of classes being offered. The schedule and registration form will be posted on the Perry Central school Web site and can be accessed at www.pccs.k12.in.us. There will also be schedules available in the elementary and high school offices at Perry Central.

  • Commissioners OK contracts with animal shelter, PCDC

    TELL CITY – Perry County commissioners approved at a regular meeting Jan. 7 an agreement outlining operation of the county’s animal shelter, an accompanying interlocal agreement, a contract with the Perry County Development Corp., and a timber-sales-revenue distribution.

  • Deadline for Lilly scholarship nears

    PERRY COUNTY – The deadline to apply for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship is approaching. The scholarship is fully funded by Lilly Endowment and is administered locally by the Perry County Community Foundation.
    One applicant will be awarded the scholarship, which covers four years of undergraduate study at an accredited Indiana college or university and an allowance for required fees, books and equipment. Further criteria apply. The deadline to apply is Jan. 21.

  • Volunteers needed for 2013 Relay for Life

    PERRY COUNTY – The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers to recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2013 Relay For Life of Perry County. Cancer survivors, caregiv-ers, community leaders and anyone wanting to make a difference are invited to participate.
    The first volunteer committee meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the United Methodist Church, 702 10th St., Tell City.

  • Library board reorganizes for year with new members

    TELL CITY – The new seven-member board of the Perry County Public Library convened for the first time Jan. 2 at the Tell City branch.

    The first order of business for the board was to elect officers for a one-year term.

    “The board has a president, a vice president, a secretary and treasurer,” Library Director John Mundy explained to new board members.

    CANNELTON – The Cannelton Legion Auxiliary will sponsor a bunco night Jan. 29. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and games will start at 6:30.
    Entry fee is a $5 donation.

  • Mayor returns department heads to posts

    TELL CITY – Mayor Barbara Ewing reappointed Tell City department heads to their jobs for 2013 at last Monday’s meetings of the city council and board of public works. She also named people to a new committee that will study annexation and present a recommendation later this year to the council.

    Tell City’s mayors have a long tradition of announcing appointments on one of two dates, the day city leaders are sworn in or during the first meetings of the new year.
