ROCKPORT - Farmers in Perry and Spencer counties who were attempting to meet a Sept. 16 deadline for certain disaster assistance programs but couldn't due to the impacts of the remnants of Hurricane Ike have until Sept. 29 to file at the Spencer-Perry Farm Service Agency Office near Rockport.

Farmers face steep losses after gusts down corn just ahead of harvest

TELL CITY - A months-long - and mostly successful - growing season for Perry County corn farmers was blown way, literally, Sept. 14 as powerful winds flattened maturing fields. Damage varied depending on location and maturity level of plants, with the fields closest to harvest sustaining some of the worst damage.

Many fields were virtually flattened and will be difficult to harvest, although some farmers planned to purchase special attachments that will help pick up some of the downed stalks.

5-year implementation could save more than $600,000

TELL CITY - Reducing by half the number of years Tell City will take to eliminate its combined-sewer overflows could save the community more than half a million dollars and lessen the impact on monthly sewage bills, members of the city council learned last week.

However, city residents will eventually pay several dollars more each month because of federal and state mandates to eliminate sewer discharges into public waterways.

Board approves budget resolutions

TELL CITY - For several years, Tell City High School Principal Dale Stewart said at a school-board meeting Sept. 9, he heard teachers say they'd gone to other schools in April to help them out.

"Why can't we get that?" he wondered.

"It's called Outreach to Teach, and we'll be the school this year," Stewart told the board members. Fifty to 100 teachers and prospective teachers will arrive in Tell City to work April 17 or 18 to perform painting, landscaping and other clean-up jobs.
