Ivan James was a rare gem of a man who inhabited the hinterland of northeast Perry County.

His occupation was farming, a most noble pursuit he'd been born into. Ivan was a wide-brimmed-hat sort of fellow, blue-denim overalls, handkerchief spilling out the back pocket, whittlin' knife hidden in the front one.

His hands were out-of-doors worn from a lifetime of hard use, but there was a softness in his eyes that revealed something of his old soul.

LEOPOLD - Perry Central improved its passing and spiking accuracy and beat South Spencer 25-13, 25-4, 25-16 in first-round Class 2A volleyball sectional action Thursday.

"I know they're not the strongest team in the world, but in most of the games we lost we beat ourselves," said Perry Central Coach Becky Genet.

"Tonight at least we passed the ball and made some things happen. We passed the ball a lot better and went to the floor and got the ball.

TELL CITY - Tell City's football team compiled the sort of statistics Friday that one might expect would give the Marksmen their first win.

They had two 160-yard rushers and gained 14 first downs as they scored a season-high 27 points.

But their defense continued to struggle as they lost to North Knox 49-27 in Class 2A first-round sectional action.

The Marksmen finished the season 0-10, their first winless season ever, as they gave up an average of 43.8 points per game. That ranked 312th among 318 teams in the state.

Local turnout will help decide close governor's race

TELL CITY - Heading into the final week before Election Day, the number of absentee ballots cast at the Perry County Courthouse has been growing daily, local voting officials said last week.

Absentee voters will help decide whether Indiana's electoral votes go to John McCain or Barack Obama and while the presidential race has much of the limelight, there are other statewide contests, including elections for governor, attorney general and superintendent of public instruction.
