    Medieval structure made of foam turns heads in Cannelton; live show planned Halloween night

    CANNELTON - What do you get by combining dozens of foam blocks, nine cans of spray paint, 50 hours of work and a little creativity? When you're Chris Blake, the result is a haunted castle that becomes Halloween central in Cannelton.

    Blake's 50-foot-long castle on Fourth Street boasts a height of 15 feet and nearly obscures his home. A longtime Halloween fan, Blake has been welcoming curious visitors for nearly two weeks, many of whom first took notice when construction began.

  • Hydroelectric project moves forward

    American Municipal Power signs contract for turbines, generators

    CANNELTON - An Ohio utility has signed a contract for a new hydroelectric project at the Cannelton Locks and Dam and is in final negotiations with contractors to begin cofferdam construction here and at two other sites. The projects could be generating electricity by 2012.

  • Marching Marksmen miss chance to advance

    Band left out of top 10 by less than half point

    JEFFERSONVILLE - Tell City's Marching Marksmen finished four-tenths of a point shy of the score needed to advance from regional to semistate in marching-band competition Saturday, according to their director.

    Only the top 10 bands at the regional at Jeffersonville High School will compete at semi-state, a new level added this year. Tell City finished 12th behind South Spencer, which was only .35 point shy of the advancing class, Director Barry Reasoner said Tuesday.

  • Commodores miss regional gold by 1 point

    Musicians preparing for future shows

    JEFFERSONVILLE - Only a point kept the Perry Central Marching Commodores from earning a gold rating in regional marching-band competition at Jeffersonville High School Saturday, according to Band Director Rob Cason.

    "We had the best show of the year, easily," he said Wednesday. "We were pleased with how the show went."

    While "there are always things that could have gone better," he added, "a lot of things went right. The show held together better overall and the closer went better."

  • Hill, Sodrel battle for 9th District House seat

    PERRY COUNTY - In what has become a biannual battle, Democrat Baron Hill and Republican Mike Sodrel are each hoping to claim victory Nov. 4 in the race for Indiana's Ninth Congressional District.

    This is the fourth consecutive election in which the two men have faced off. Hill is the incumbent this year, having defeated Sodrel in 2006. The Democrat lost to Sodrel in 2004 after serving three terms.

  • State board defers Cannelton Schools request

    Chapman hopeful bonds, loan will be OK'd next month

    INDIANAPOLIS - Cannelton Schools Superintendent Al Chapman's effort to pay off the school corporation's heavy debt was thwarted, at least temporarily, by concerns expressed at a state Board of Education meeting Oct. 1.

    Chapman's turn in the four-hour meeting came at about the three-hour point, and was introduced with an explanation that a 1959 school-reorganization law prohibits school corporations from incurring debt that would make consolidations undesirable.

  • Don't forget local Nov. 4 races

    For those men and women who live and breathe politics, the past few weeks have been heavenly. Indiana is in the presidential spotlight and Hoosiers will have a real say two weeks from tomorrow in deciding who will live in the White House for the next four years.

    It doesn't get much better than this for political junkies and as evidenced by the letters in this and past issues of The News, lots of us are truly interested in Nov. 4 races. It seems to be working. I just hope other races aren't being overlooked.

  • Parks board deserves congratulations for seeing Eagles Bluff project through

    The Perry County Parks and Recreation Department deserves congratulations for its perseverance in seeing the Eagles Bluff Park project through to completion.

    Building a new visitors center and restroom building, repaving the deteriorated parking lot and entrance to the park, rebuilding the deck overlooking the Ohio River and the Cannelton Locks and Dam and putting new fencing around that deck had been planned by the parks board since it purchased the property from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1999.

  • Cougars capitalize on PC special-team play

    RAMSEY - Perry Central's misplays on special teams led to three North Harrison scores as the Commodores lost to the Cougars 22-0 in eighth grade football Thursday.

    The Cougars scored a safety off a blocked punt, blocked another punt at Tell City's 3-yard line to set up a Cougar touchdown, and ran the third-quarter kickoff back for a touchdown.

    Perry Central's regular defensive unit had "the best game we've played all year," said Coach Neal Stahly. "Outside linebacker Kyle Stevenson made about 12 or 13 tackles."
