  • Ban on open burning lifted

    PERRY COUNTY - A ban on open burning in place for two weeks was lifted Thursday by the county's fire chiefs.

    Prohibitions on fires, including the burning of limbs and branches, was adopted Sept. 25 in response to drought-like conditions.

    Most areas of the county received at least an inch of rain last week.

  • Applications for crop disaster aid due by Dec. 1

    ROCKPORT - The Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program was designed to reduce financial losses that occur when natural disasters cause a catastrophic loss of production or prevented planting of an eligible crop by providing coverage equivalent to catastrophic insurance.

    Statutes limit NAP to each commercial crop or agricultural commodity, except livestock, for which CAT is not available.

  • Marching toward regional

    Tell City High School Marching Marksmen practice in a parking lot Thursday evening in preparation for an invitational two days later and regional competition this Saturday. They'll perform their show for the public at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Legion Field. They'll also compete in WFIE-TV's Battle of the Bands, a contest that allows them and their supporters to submit votes by e-mail toward a $1,000 cash prize. To vote, anyone can go to www.14wfie.com and click on "Sports," then "Touchdown Live 2008," then scroll down to click on the "Battle of the Bands" icon.

  • March for Babies brings hundreds of supporters

    TELL CITY - Residents of Perry and Spencer counties joined together by the hundreds to raise more than $15,000 for March for Babies, formerly known as WalkAmerica, to benefit all babies - those born healthy as well as those who need help to survive and thrive.

    "I am proud that residents joined together to support the health of all babies," said Tammy Hatfield, March for Babies chairperson. "The efforts made and money raised by our volunteers this year will help the March of Dimes achieve its goal of ensuring that every baby has a healthy start in life that much sooner."

  • Eagles Bluff ready for debut

    Visitor center dedication set for Wednesday

    CANNELTON - The Perry County Parks and Recreation Department tentatively hopes to open Eagles Bluff Park, including its new visitor center and restroom building, to the public this weekend.

    The board had originally hoped to reopen the park, which has been closed during the construction project, Oct. 4. But the opening was delayed when a leak in one of the two wetland cells that treats sewage from the restrooms was discovered.

  • Legislative breakfast Thursday at Bill & Dave's Smokin' Pit

    TELL CITY - The Perry County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its annual legislative breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bill & Dave's Smokin' Pit in Tell City.

    This breakfast has been arranged to give businesses and residents in Perry County the opportunity to bring important legislative issues to the attention of current legislators.

    All Perry County legislators have been invited to this event. The public is invited.

    District 1 candidates for commissioner share goals, opinions

    TELL CITY - Candidates for the District 1 seat on the county's board of commissioners used a Sept. 25 forum to give voters a look at what they want to do if elected.

    Perry County News Editor and moderator Vince Luecke asked candidates about the county's assets, the possibility of a new hospital and transportation in an event sponsored by the Perry County Chamber of Commerce and The News.

  • Tell City under water boil advisory Wednesday

    TELL CITY - As a precautionary step in response to planned work that day at the city's water-treatment plant, Tell City residents are advised to boil the water they'll consume from 9 a.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday. Water used for drinking and cooking should be boiled for at least five minutes, Water Department Superintendent Dale Poole said Monday. Residents with questions can call the water department at 547-3266.

  • Walk-to-School Day

    William Tell Elementary School Principal Laura Noble, left, joined more than 250 students, teachers, parents and others in walking to the school Friday morning. Marking International Walk to School in the USA, the group marched from the Tell City-Perry County Public Library to William Tell. During a brief talk before students headed to classes, Noble shared news about fundraising efforts for a new walking trail on school grounds that will complement a sidewalk the city plans to construct along Tell Street to connect the school and the library.
