    BY MARY S. SOMMER, News Correspondent, Phone 719-8423 — Our sympathy to the families of Roger Arnold, Billie Rissler, Augusta Nugent and Earl Rearden. May these and all the departed rest in peace.

    Roger Arnold passed away Wednesday, July 1, at his residence in Texas. A celebration of life will be held for Roger at 12:30 p.m., Aug. 9, at his home place in Mariah Hill.

    Billie Rissler passed away July 11. She was laid to rest in the Walker Cemetery in Branchville. We will miss her smiling face at Golden Living, when we entertain the residents.

    This coming Sunday, Leopold will be busy with the church picnic taking place. Try to get out and show your support.

  • Mariah Hill to hold annual picnic Sunday, Aug. 9

    MARIAH HILL – The annual Mariah Hill Picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 9 on the Mary Help of Christian’s Church grounds located in Mariah Hill. Beginning at 10 a.m., fried chicken dinners will be served in the dining hall. Mariah Hill Famous Soup will be available by the bowl or in bulk. Attendees are asked to take containers. The grand raffle will be held at 4:30 p.m. with many prizes. More than 25 hand-made quilts, as well as other prizes, will be raffled. Many games, food and refreshments will be available. Free shuttle service will be provided.

  • Knits & Knots to meet Aug. 13

    TELL CITY – Would you like to knit or crochet hats and scarves for homeless shelters, veteran hospitals and Head Start children? Take your needles or crochet hooks and they’ll supply the yarn. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Tell City First United Methodist Church.

  • Sisters’ Aug. 15 program will reflect on Mary

    FERDINAND – The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand will offer a program, “Mary: A Gift to Many,”  Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. EDT at the Benedictine Hospitality Center at Kordes Hall on the grounds of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand.

    The program will explore the world’s view of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and how she is prayed to, celebrated, and recognized through many different cultural customs.

  • Commissioners advance budget; consider additional EMS personnel

    TELL CITY – The Perry County Board of Commissioners voted Monday during a regular session to advance a proposed 2016 budget that will include 3-percent pay increases across the board for employees. The suggested raises were briefly discussed at the commissioners’ last meeting in June, when they announced it would be included on their budget agenda.

    The county council will consider the recommendations and have final say in formally accepted budgets and any salary adjustments.
