  • Marksmen still have shot at PAC swim title

    TELL CITY—Tell City probably won’t dominate the PAC girls swim meet the way it did last year. But Coach Mike Page thinks the Marksmen have a chance to win it for the fourth year in a row.
    With a veteran team the Marksmen won 11 of 12 events in the PAC last year. This year they have nine letter winners returning, six fewer than last year.
    There are six seniors and six freshmen on the 16-girl roster.

  • Cannelton girls team has 5 letter winners

    CANNELTON—As usual depth is a concern for Cannelton’s girls basketball team, but experience is not.
    The Bulldogs have just eight players on their roster but they return five of their six letter winners from last year’s 9-11 team. Another player played two years ago.
    “I think our experience is going to be our main strength,” said Coach Mike Garrett. “We have three girls who’ve started for four years, and Mikah (Hemmings) and Allicyn (Garrett) started last year.”

  • TC cheerleaders fourth in state

    NEW CASTLE—Tell  City finished fourth in Class 2A at the Indiana cheerleading state contest Saturday, just missing qualifying for the nationals.
    The top three teams in each class (based on a school’s basketball classification) qualified for the nationals. Tell City finished only eight-tenths of a point behind third-place Clinton Central among five teams competing in Class 2A.

  • Hayes 2nd-team all-state

    INDIANAPOLIS—Tell City junior McKenzie Hayes was named to the Class 2A second-team all-state volleyball team by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Sunday.
    Hayes, a 6-foot-1 junior middle hitter and setter, led the state in kills with 730, a school record. She has made 1,588 kills in her three-year varsity career.
    Hayes also led the Marksmen with 126 total blocks, including 85 solos, and 55 ace serves.

  • Tell City has more depth, experience

    TELL CITY—With eight of its top 10 players returning from last year, Tell City’s girls basketball team hopes to improve on last year’s 6-17 record.
    McKenzie Hayes, a 6-foot-1 junior center, is the top returnee. She averaged 15.5 points and a school-record 13.4 rebounds per game last year and set a school record with 81 blocked shots despite missing seven games.

  • Perry Central has young, quick team

    LEOPOLD—Perry Central’s girls basketball team graduated four starters, including three three-year starters, from last year’s 17-5 team that won the PLAC and set a school record for most wins.
    But the Commodores return a 6-foot-1 all-conference center and have an intriguing mix of quick, young players.
    “I really think we’re quicker overall than last year,” said Coach Bill Dickerson. “I think we’re just as quick as 75 percent of the teams we’ll play.”

  • Goffinet named TC’s girls cross country MVP again

    TELL CITY—Sarah Goffinet won the girls cross country most valuable runner for the fourth year in a row at Tell City’s fall sports awards program Monday.
    McKenzie Hayes was chosen the most valuable offensive player in volleyball after being named the team’s MVP last year.
    Hana Reed was named the most valuable defensive volleyball player, and no overall MVP was named.
    Elliott Brown won the offensive MVP in football and Trevor Zuelly won the defensive MVP.

  • Optimist blanket drive starts Nov. 19

    TELL CITY – The Tell City Optimist Club will conduct its annual blanket drive from Nov. 19 to Dec. 17.
    Items accepted will be any size blanket or throw.
    Drop off locations will be set up at Old National Bank, Fifth Third Bank, German American banks and the Evangelical United Church of Christ and St. Paul Catholic Church.

  • North Perry students learn about community helpers

    LEOPOLD – During the month of October, students of the Lincoln Hills Development Corp. North Perry Head Start learned about community helpers and careers.

    The students had an opportunity to create a community of their own, using a brown paper bag, construction paper shapes and colors, along with markers, crayons and glue sticks. When they were finished, the students gathered their buildings for a community display.
