    Surveys conducted as part of Perry County’s Hometown Competitiveness Program turned up some interesting data about the challenges facing our community – as well as many of its strengths. A public presentation of findings by five committees was conducted Feb. 21 and we’ll share the details of the findings in a story soon.

  • EDITORIAL: Snowe’s retirement should be wakeup call for Tea Party

    Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, surprised most political observers when she announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election this year.

    According to USA Today, she said “she could not face another unproductive six-year term with the polarization and partisanship that has overtaken Washington – and the Senate in particular.”

    The Tea Party wing of Republicans is trying to purge the GOP of moderates such as Snowe, but Snowe’s retirement announcement should be a wakeup call that their strategy is likely to backfire.

  • Legislative breakfast set for Saturday

    TELL CITY – The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will host a legislative breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Bill and Dave’s Smokin’ Pit, 1525 11th Street, Tell City.

    Sen. Richard Young and Rep. Sue Ellspermann are planning to attend.

    The legislators will give a summary of the session and will open the floor to questions.

    Bill and Dave’s will offer a full breakfast buffet for $7.95 per person.

  • Downtown group members appointed

    TELL CITY – Mayor Barbara Ewing has named members to a Tell City Development and Action Committee that will present ideas for rejuvenating the city’s downtown area.

    Members of the group are Jon Scheer, Cheri Taylor, Chris Cail, Tony Hollinden, Carol Hagedorn, Penny Newlin, Bev Minto, Vince Luecke, James Rasch and Debra Emerson.

  • County parks, rec hikes coming

    PERRY COUNTY – The Perry County Parks and Recreation Department will host several hikes this winter and spring. All of the hikes are open to the public:

    • Saturday, Pete’s Cave, four miles. Trail begins at 9 a.m. with group meeting at the St. Croix convenience store at the intersection of Indiana 62 and Indiana 37.

    • March 24, Two Loops Trail East, 10 miles, at the Celina Lake Recreational Area. Hike begins at 9 a.m. at the entrance on Indiana 37.

  • PC students shine at contest

    LEOPOLD – Marimba player Trent Pringle earned a gold medal at Indiana State School Music Association solo and ensemble competition Feb. 26 in Indianapolis, and a percussion ensemble earned a silver rating despite a broken arm.

    Snare drummer Cord Bennett was injured four days before the contest, according to Music Director Rob Cason.

  • Dollars for Scholars accepting applications

    TELL CITY – The board of directors of Dollars for Scholars of Tell City-Perry County has announced it is accepting applications for interest-free loans to be awarded to students pursuing a post-high school education for the fall 2012 semester.

    Applications are available at the offices of the guidance counselors at Cannelton, Perry Central and Tell City high schools and at Fifth Third Bank. The deadline for submitting applications is June 1.

  • Child-porn suspect has previous conviction

    TELL CITY – A Tell City man arrested last week on charges of possessing and receiving child pornography had a previous conviction of child molesting, the U.S. attorney for southern Indiana said Thursday.

  • Duo works to ‘box out bullying’

    TELL CITY – A two-man troupe entertained students at Tell City and Perry Central schools last week, using props, costumes and just plain silliness to present a serious message about bullying.

    A locked trunk sat mid-stage throughout their show, and contained the answer to the problem. Much of their performance was focused on how to get into the box. When they finally did, the answer was simple.


    The single word was written on a slip of paper, the only item inside.
