  • Etienne to be installed Wednesday as Cheyenne bishop

    CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A Perry County native, who was ordained a priest in 1992 and worked as a pastor in Indianapolis and a director of seminarians before returning to his home county last summer, will be ordained bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cheyenne Wednesday.

  • Foundry wants permit for monofill in Spencer County

    ROCKPORT — A public hearing Thursday will offer the community a chance to learn more about a proposal to construct an industrial monofill on 124 acres in Huff Township.

    According to a petition filed by ThyssenKrupp Waupaca and landowners Paul and Pamela Metz, the site would be used to dispose of solid residual materials generated as byproducts of the Perry County foundry's operations.

    Waupaca currently transports material to a monofill near Troy.

  • Band invites others to Disney World

    TELL CITY - The Tell City High School Band is planning to take a motor-coach trip to Orlando, Fla. March 22-27, and invites others to join them so costs can be held down for everyone.

    Band Boosters President Patty Hawkins said she'd like to have 12 to 14 more community members sign up to fill remaining seats on a bus. They don't have to be associated with the band. Any non-band student making the trip must be accompanied by an adult.

    PERRY COUNTY - Steve Upmeyer, president of the Perry County Community Foundation's board of directors, has announced that scholarship opportunities are available through the foundation's Community Scholarship Program and the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program.

  • Legion to honor World War II veterans today

    TELL CITY - Tell City American Legion Post 213 will host two events Monday in remembrance of Dec. 7, 1941, and in appreciation of World War II veterans.

    From 9 to 11 a.m., the Legion will hold a late breakfast at the post home. All veterans and their spouses or guests are invited to attend. Coffee, juice and baked goods will be served. The American Legion Auxiliary will bake and serve the food in appreciation of veterans' service to our country in all wars.

  • American Legion to host Petillo, McDonald

    TELL CITY - American Legion Post 213 Tell City will host vocal group hall of fame singer Johnny Petillo and comedian Jeff McDonald Saturday at the Legion.

    Petillo is best-known for the song "Let's Go to the Hop" and has worked with other musicians over the last three decades.

    McDonald has traveled nationally and opened for Jerry Seinfeld and Drew Carey. He has written comedy for the Bob and Tom Show and has appeared in numerous commercials.

  • Maurices Toys for Tots drive ends Thursday

    TELL CITY - Maurices in Tell City will hold a Toys for Tots drive today through Thursday.

    Customers can drop off their donations anytime during store hours Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

    Items needed include new toys for all ages.

    Customers donating will receive a coupon for each donation good for 20 percent off any one regular-priced item in the store.

    Coupons are limited to 10 per person.

  • For cities, county, a lot rides on Census 2010

    In just a few months Census 2010 will become a reality, with Perry County residents receiving their census forms in the mail. We can't stress how important it is for all of us to participate and complete the simple 10-question form.

    Tell City has formed a Complete Count Committee, led by Louie and Marcie Heitkemper with representatives from schools, community groups, churches and media. Its chief goal is to educate citizens about how important the census is. That group's message is equally important to all county residents.

  • Holiday traditions good and bad

    The holiday season isn't just about eating, but meals seem to be an important part of year-end celebrations for many of us. They certainly are for me.

    One of my holiday goals has been finding more time to spend with family, friends and others in the community. With one holiday down and two to go, my record is mixed, but I'm still determined to spend more time enjoying others' company and less time working.
