  • Man kills self after standoff in Troy

    TROY – A man with a gun to his head fatally shot himself in Troy Sunday night following an hour-long standoff with police.

    Ellsworth “Skip” Mongillo was pronounced dead at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No one else was injured in the standoff, which began just after 7 p.m. with a call from a family member who had been in the home at 300 Washington St.  but  who left to call police. She said the 57-year-old threatened to kill himself and was armed.

  • Tickets on sale for ‘Wizard,’ ‘Cousin’

    LINCOLN CITY – Tickets for Lincoln Amphitheatre’s “The Wizard of Oz” and “Our American Cousin” went on sale Friday.

    “The Wizard of Oz” will take the stage Thursday through Saturday evenings July 21 through Aug. 7. Sunday matinees will also be performed

    “Our American Cousin” will run Friday and Saturday evenings with a Sunday matinee Aug. 19-27.

  • Rep. Young to speak at GOP event April 16

    TELL CITY – Local Republicans will host their annual Lincoln Day Dinner April 16 at Bill & Dave’s Smokin’ Pit in Tell City. The meal will begin at noon.

    U.S. Rep. Todd Young will be the guest speaker. State Rep. Sue Ellspermann will also speak.

    Tickets are $12 and can be purchased by calling Tom McCart at 547-6156 or Jennifer Land at 457-3158.

  • Revival set

    TELL CITY – Pastor Ron Ammon of the Bethel Baptist Church, 911 Fulton St. in Tell City, has announced the church will hold revival services Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

    Michael Soop of Lawrenceville, Ga., will be guest speaker. Services will begin at 7 p.m. and include special singing and music by various church members.

    The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

  • Art show starts today

    TELL CITY – The seventh annual Tell City High School Art Show will be held this year from today through April 8 in the new Tell City Junior-Senior High School Library. It will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

    Visitors are asked to park in the teachers-visitors parking lot and sign in at the office during the school day. The art department and students wish to ask the parents, businesses and community to attend and see their artwork.

    Visitors are asked to remember to vote on their favorites.

  • VFD to meet today

    ROME – The Rome Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. today.

    The meting will be held at the Rome Courthouse. Three board member positions will be filled by elections.

    All property owners in Tobin Township are eligible to fill the positions and to vote. All other paid members are also eligible.

  • Still time to submit downtown suggestions

    TELL CITY – Your voice counts! A group of Tell City business, economic development and retail individuals are developing a plan to advance and improve its downtown. This Tell City downtown development group would like input from all Perry County residents.

  • Actors delight in "Quarantine"

    TELL CITY – The Marksmen drama department put on their annual play March 11 through March 13.

    The play they performed was “A Delightful Quarantine,” a comedy about how the town of Wilspier, Penn., reacts when they are put into quarantine during an alien invasion. The quarantine caused everyone to act differently. Some used it as a chance to have a little fun while others used it as a chance to meet their families. The entire play was narrated by freshman Kyle Boyer.

  • Registration for primary election ends today

    PERRY COUNTY – County Clerk Jean M. Schulthise reminds voters that today is the last day to register to vote for the primary election May 3. Registration applications must be received in the office, by mail or in person, by the close of business today.

    Voter registration forms and instructions for submitting them are available at the clerk’s office or on the secretary of state’s Web site at www.in.gov/sos. Voters may also register at any office of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles or online at www.indianavoters.com.

  • Power outages possible in TC this week

    TELL CITY – Due to maintenance scheduled this week at the Tell City Electric Department’s East Substation, there will be brief outages during this week, the utility reported to The News.

    The substation is located at 19th and Jefferson streets.
