  • BREAKING NEWS - No foul play in 1-year-old's death

    TELL CITY - A year-old girl pronounced dead Sunday at Perry County Memorial Hospital died of natural causes, likely from a bacterial infection, Perry County's coroner said Monday afternoon.

    Sashia Marcum died at 4:48 p.m. at the hospital, Darrel Riley said. An autopsy was performed Monday morning in Louisville, Ky., and showed no sign of foul play or injury, he said. State police and the Indiana Department of Child Services were notified after the child's death and began an investigation.

  • Lawsuit against ex-priest to proceed

    INDIANAPOLIS - A superior-court judge in Indianapolis ruled Dec. 20 against a request to throw out a civil lawsuit against a priest accused of molesting boys at several Indiana Catholic parishes, including those in Tell City, Cannelton and Troy.

  • Mayor: City Hall needs citizen input

    Sworn in Tuesday, Ewing asks residents to get involved

    TELL CITY - Echoing a famous call for civic participation by President John F. Kennedy, Tell City Mayor Barbara Ewing used her own inaugural address Tuesday to advocate for a new level of partnership between the city's leaders and citizens.

    Just 6 years old when Kennedy was inaugurated in 1961, Ewing said she and other officials know the cooperation and involvement of residents will be essential if the city is to better the lives of its residents, improve crucial infrastructure and promote community growth.

  • Soldiers depart for Indy, Georgia

    TELL CITY - National Guard soldiers assigned to the Tell City armory left at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday on a journey expected to take them to Indianapolis, then Georgia, then Iraq.

    The departure marked the end of a Christmas break for the soldiers assigned to Detachment 1 of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment. A 10-day training stint at Camp Atterbury preceded their holiday break, and more training is to come at Fort Stewart, Ga., before they deploy in March to the Middle East to provide security for convoys.

  • Red Cross offering CPR, first-aid class Jan. 19

    TELL CITY - An American Red Cross cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid class for adults will be taught Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Tell City-Perry County Public Library.

  • Group collecting new diapers

    PERRY COUNTY - The Perry County Democratic Association is collecting diapers for needy families.

    Donations can be dropped off at CVS Pharmacy, Noble's IGA, Mor-For-Less or Save-A-Lot. Donations will be accepted Jan. 6-31.

  • Sunday fundraiser to benefit TC band

    TELL CITY - A pizza fundraiser sponsored by Pizza Inn and the Tell City High School Band Sunday will allow hungry patrons to support the band.

    The band will receive a portion of all sales between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Band students will be waiting tables as part of the fundraiser. Dine-in, carry-out or delivery services will all apply to the fundraiser.

  • HNF accepting trees until Tuesday

    TELL CITY - The Hoosier National Forest is accepting live Christmas trees for recycling through Tuesday.

    Trees can be dropped off at the ranger station on Washington Street.

    The trees will be placed in local lakes, where they will serve as habitat for fish.

    Ornaments and tinsel should be removed from the trees before they are dropped off. Call the Forest Service at (812) 547-7051 for more information or with questions.

  • American Sign Language class planned

    TELL CITY - A beginner's American Sign Language course will be available at Tell City Junior High School beginning Monday.

    The course will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday evenings Jan. 7 to Feb. 25. Cost is $40.

  • Gardening writer Jeneen Wiche visiting Jan. 29

    BRISTOW - Jeneen Wiche, whose gardening column appears regularly in The Perry County News, will be the guest speaker at the Jan. 29 meeting of the Perry County Soil and Water Conservation District.

    The 60th annual meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Bristow Community Center. Cost for the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Reservations are required and must be made by Jan. 24. For more information or to make reservations call 547-4686.
