  • PC Learning Academy students garner credits

    TELL CITY - Students attending the Perry County Learning Academy have earned 65 credits this semester, according to a report by Executive Director Mike Bishop to its two-member board of directors Jan. 8.

    The state Education Department notified him Dec. 5, he said, the learning academy is eligible for $7,584 from its adult-education division for the period Feb. 1 to June 30. He also noted that under a collaboration with Joe Hall and the Perry County Lifelong Learning Network, 43 students enrolled in GED-preparation classes during 2007.

  • School hosting financial-aid workshop

    LEOPOLD - Perry Central will host a Free Application for Federal Student Aid workshop Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 pm in the high school library for all high school seniors and their parents.

    All seniors who will attend any post-secondary schools are encouraged to fill out the FAFSA even if they do not believe they will qualify for federal or state aid. Please contact Jody French for more information at 843-5121.

    TELL CITY - Tell City High School will host a financial aid workshop for parents at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the high-school cafeteria. A financial aid representative will explain the procedure for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and answer any questions parents may have.

  • Operation Round Up accepting applications

    Grants available for scholarships, volunteer groups, individuals

    PERRY COUNTY - The Operation Round Up board of trustees will accept grant applications now until Feb. 15 for the first round of disbursement in March. Applications are available in the Southern Indiana Rural Electric Corp. office and at www.sirec.com.

  • One-year-old Ferdinand girl died from bacterial infection

    TELL CITY - A 1-year-old girl pronounced dead Sunday at Perry County Memorial Hospital died of natural causes, likely from a bacterial infection, Perry County's coroner said Monday afternoon.

    Sashia Marcum died at 4:48 p.m. at the hospital, Darrel Riley said. An autopsy was performed Monday morning in Louisville, Ky., and showed no sign of foul play or injury, he said. State police and the Indiana Department of Child Services were notified after the child's death and began an investigation.

  • State employees ring in 2008 with pay increase

    PERRY COUNTY - State employees will find a little extra buying power in their paychecks in 2008 with state workers receiving raises averaging 4.8 percent this year. State workers judged to be high performers will see the biggest increases.

    All state employees received 1.5-percent raises in their final 2007 paychecks. Those whose performance evaluations meet expectations will receive an additional 3-percent performance-based increase, for a combined total pay raise of 4.5 percent.

  • Council postpones vote on electric-rate increase

    TELL CITY - The Tell City Common Council agreed Monday to postpone consideration of an electric-rate increase and could vote next month to phase-in higher rates the superintendent of the Tell City Electric Department said are needed to cover expenses and fund future projects.

    The council introduced rate increases in December and scheduled a public hearing for Monday. The new schedule of rates would boost residential electric costs by an average of 8.6 percent while customers across all rate classes would pay an average of 12.9 percent more for power.

    Rogers cites personal reasons for departure

    TELL CITY - The superintendent of Tell City's water department quit Monday, citing personal reasons for leaving the position he held for almost two years. The city council, which also serves as the city's water board, will meet in closed session at 4 p.m. today to discuss personnel issues.

  • New mayor eliminates fire-department positions

    Graves says he'll exercise authority as he sees fit

    CANNELTON - The first Cannelton Common Council meeting of the year, conducted by a new mayor and mostly-new city council, was to be brief, Mayor Morris "Smokey" Graves indicated as he was starting it. An effort on his part to eliminate two fire-department positions, however, generated enough conversation to stretch it to an hour of verbal jousting, despite his efforts to shut it down.
