  • Davis to become county clerk Feb. 1

    TELL CITY - Doris Davis, first deputy under two county clerks, will begin shouldering the duties of the office's top job Feb. 1. An employee of the office since 1998, Davis was appointed county clerk Saturday by Democratic precinct chairmen.

    She will succeed Debbie Elder, who has accepted the position of treasurer for the Tell City-Troy Township School Corp. Davis will serve the balance of Elder's term, which runs through 2010.

    Davis said she has worked hard to maintain the high standards of the office as first-deputy clerk and will serve the public well as county clerk.

  • Port officials approve bond terms

    Second attempt nets offers from two area financial institutions

    TELL CITY - Perry County Port Authority-Hoosier Southern Railroad board members met the evening of Martin Luther King Jr. Day to press ahead on efforts to fund infrastructure improvements they've been pursuing for several years.

    The result of their holiday meeting, a resolution incorporating terms of a bond bid from First State Bank, was to go before county commissioners and council members in meetings Wednesday and today, respectively.

  • Pioneer Days meeting Tuesday

    TROY - The planning committee for this year's Pioneer Days celebration in Troy will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the town meeting room next to the utility office.

    Anyone who wants to assist with the celebration is invited.

  • Teen substance-abuse workshops scheduled

    TELL CITY - Dr. George R. Ross will present several free workshops about teenage substance abuse in February for the public and specialized groups.

    Beginning Feb. 10, Ross will hold a workshop for recovering addicts called "Tips on Recovery: Understanding the Change Process" from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at Agape Community Church, 101 Taylor St., Cannelton.

    From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 and 12, he will talk to the public about teenage substance abuse at the Schergens Center in Tell City.

  • Meetings slated for school candidates

    INDIANAPOLIS - Forums intended to help school-board candidates learn how to be informed, effective public-school leaders will be conducted at 10 Indiana sites Feb. 4-13.

    Led by Indiana School Boards Association staff members, each meeting will start with registration from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and adjourn at 9 p.m. Topics will include roles and responsibilities, open meetings and executive sessions, and other issues school-board members are likely to encounter.
