    Century-old system would end under commission's proposal

    PERRY COUNTY - Betty "Mac" Labhart feels she's probably serving her last term as Union Township trustee, and if so, "I just don't want them to forget about us up here," she said Wednesday.

    The Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform report released last month recommends the transfer of duties now carried out by township trustees to the county level.

  • Bristow woman warns residents to avoid scam

    PERRY COUNTY - A rural Bristow woman who received a $3,800 check in the mail earlier this month is warning residents not to fall for scams involving supposed sweepstakes winnings.

    A letter was mailed to the woman Jan. 3 and included a check from a Richmond, Va., company that was reportedly one of the prize sponsors. The check, according to the letter, was to be deposited to help the winner pay for taxes and an administrative fee for the $20,000 cruise she had reportedly won.

  • Offices closing for Monday holiday

    PERRY COUNTY - Most governmental offices in the county will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

    County offices at the courthouse and courthouse annex will be closed, as will municipal offices in Tell City and Troy.

    Trash pickup in Tell City will be delayed by one day next week.

    City offices in Cannelton will be open Monday but state offices, including the Perry County Family and Social Services Administration Office, will be closed.

  • Faithful for 107 Years

    Theodore Heck is the oldest benedictine monk in the world

    The Rev. Theodore Heck OSB celebrated his 107th birthday this week, marking another milestone at the Benedictine monastery he first arrived at by horse and buggy in 1918. Father Theodore is already the oldest Benedictine monk in the world and to mark his Jan. 16 birthday, a catered lunch was served in the monastery infirmary, where Father Theodore resides. He was also be given a place of honor at the head table for that evening's dinner in the monastery.

  • Library board OKs staff salaries for '08

    TELL CITY - The Tell City-Perry County Public Library's board of directors approved a 2008 salary schedule during a Jan. 2 meeting. Members also elected board officers for the new year and learned circulation numbers for 2007 likely hit a new record.

    The 2008 salaries reflect a 3-percent increase from last year, a raise approved by board members in 2007. Larry Oathout, the library's director, will earn $41,845 for the year, with Paul Sanders, the assistant director, paid $30,904.

  • Officials approve medical care for county inmates

    PERRY COUNTY - County Commissioners finalized an agreement Jan. 7 with Peoria, Ill.-based Advanced Correction Healthcare to provide medical services for county inmates. As The News reported previously, the commissioners approved a verbal agreement with the company in December on the condition that the Perry County Council approved the needed funds at its Jan. 3 meeting. The council approved the contract for $53,837 for this year, with future increases capped at 5 percent for a one- to two-year contract and 3 percent for a three- to five-year contract.

  • Tell City man jailed for brandishing knife

    TELL CITY - A Tell City man who allegedly used a knife to threaten another man Friday morning remained in the county jail Wednesday on charges of intimidation, criminal recklessness and invasion of privacy.

    Michael W. Faucett, of 702 Ninth St., was arrested at the home of a relative on Washington Street by Tell City officers and state police.

  • Capitol Hill cuts may affect port authority's plans

    Local officials continue press for funding

    TELL CITY - An effort in Congress to reduce earmarks could affect the Perry County Port Authority's ability to obtain funding for an infrastructure-upgrade project.

    "This Congress promised to be more ethical and work on funding; they slashed earmarks in half," Adam Dickey told port-authority board members at a regular meeting Jan. 11. A field representative in Rep. Baron Hill's office, Dickey said that promise means less money is available for needed projects.
