  • Council defers sheriff's $25,000 request

    Glenn hopes to employ part-time deputy

    TELL CITY - Perry County Council members tabled at a regular meeting Jan. 24 a request from Sheriff Bob Glenn for a $25,000 additional appropriation intended to pay a part-time officer's salary.

    A part-time deputy is needed, Glenn told the council, to fill a gap created when existing deputies take vacation, holiday or personal-days time off or the sick leave they're entitled to. Added up, the six deputies' time off totals 115 man-days per year.

  • Officials agree to back port bonds

    TELL CITY - Perry County Council members provided in a regular meeting Jan. 24 financial backing the county's port authority needed in order to issue bonds for an infrastructure upgrade.

  • Frigid Start to Friday

    The thermometer in front of First State Bank registered a frigid 5 degrees just after 8 a.m. Friday after logging a low of minus 3 before dawn. The cold had employees at City Hall (background) arriving for their jobs hurrying inside. While Friday was sunny, the mercury never reached the freezing point. Forecasters were calling for cloudy but warmer conditions today, with a high of 49.

  • Visitors bureau planning for 2008 Dogwood Tour

    PERRY COUNTY - Perry County will again play host to its 46th annual Dogwood Tour April 26-27.

    The tour takes visitors and locals alike through Perry County to marvel as winter surrenders to the beauty of spring. The Perry County Convention and Visitors Bureau is taking applications from businesses that want to participate in this year's tour. Applications must be received by the CVB office no later than Feb. 15 to be included in the annual printed brochure.

  • Chief justice to speak at 2008 Lincoln Day Program

    LINCOLN CITY - Frank Williams, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island and one of the country's most renowned experts on Abraham Lincoln, will be the featured speaker at the annual Lincoln Day Program Feb. 10.

    The program begins at 2 p.m. in the Abraham Lincoln Hall of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City.

    Following the indoor program, the traditional pilgrimage to the gravesite of Nancy Hanks Lincoln for a wreath-laying ceremony will be held.

  • Conversational Spanish course begins Feb. 4

    LEOPOLD - Vincennes University Jasper Campus, in cooperation with the Community Learning Center of Perry County and Perry Central High School, will offer a course on conversational Spanish.

    This adult-education course is designed for beginners and will be an introduction to word phrases that are useful in everyday situations. Students will learn proper pronunciation and vocabulary that may be used day-to-day when traveling or at work and also learn about Hispanic culture and society.

  • Round Up grant requests due Feb. 15

    PERRY COUNTY - The Operation Round Up board of trustees will accept grant applications until Feb. 15 for the first round of disbursement in March. Applications are available in the Southern Indiana Rural Electric Corp. office and at www.sirec.com.

  • United Way funding applications available

    PERRY COUNTY - Health and human-service organizations are invited to apply for funding from the United Way of Perry County until Feb. 29. Funding applications are available at the United Way office or by calling 547-2577.

    Last year the United Way distributed more than $75,000 to area health and human-service organizations. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. Feb. 29. Any applications received after the deadline or any incomplete application will not be considered.

  • Substance-abuse workshops begin Feb. 10 at Agape

    TELL CITY - Dr. George R. Ross will present several free workshops about teenage substance abuse in February for the public and specialized groups.

    Beginning Feb. 10, Ross will hold a workshop for recovering addicts called "Tips on Recovery: Understanding the Change Process" from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at Agape Community Church, 101 Taylor St., Cannelton.

  • LHDC to offer 35 development accounts

    TELL CITY - Lincoln Hills Development Corp. has been approved by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to provide Individual Development Accounts for 35 account holders throughout Perry, Crawford and Spencer counties.

    LHDC still has openings to establish these special tax-free savings accounts for eligible applicants with low to moderate incomes.

    Through the IDA program, qualified applicants learn financial skills while saving money for the specific purposes that IDAs are intended:
