  • Emergency planning committee elects officers for 2008

    TELL CITY - The Perry County Local Emergency Planning Committee elected officers and discussed plans at a meeting Monday for a disaster-recovery exercise later this year. The LEPC meets quarterly. Among its duties is maintaining a registry of potentially hazardous chemicals in the county and planning for emergencies such as tornadoes, collisions, chemical spills and terrorist attacks.

  • Terrys plan maple-syrup demo Saturday

    TELL CITY - A local family long active in stewardship of forest resources will host guests Saturday at a demonstration of maple-syrup making.

    Marshall "Doc" Terry and his family will host the event with Lincoln Hills Resource Conservation and Development Area's Forestry Committee. The free demonstration will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by noon.

    Terry will demonstrate various sap-collection methods and process the sap into syrup. Guests will be treated to a free pancake and sausage meal and receive free tree seedlings from the forestry committee.

  • Community invited to anti-drug workshops

    Ross will share ways to fight abuse among teens

    TELL CITY - Dr. George R. Ross will present several free workshops about teenage substance abuse in February for the public and specialized groups.

    On Feb. 10, Ross will hold a workshop for recovering addicts called "Tips on Recovery: Understanding the Change Process" from 4 to 6 p.m. at Agape Community Church, 101 Taylor St., Cannelton.

    From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 and 12, he will talk to the public at the Schergens Center in Tell City about teenage substance abuse.

  • City contributes money to Frank Clemens Field building project

    Tennis courts in Hagedorn Park to get new lights

    TELL CITY - Tell City's Board of Public Works and Safety decided at its Jan. 22 meeting to contribute $7,000 to a new building project at Frank Clemens Field.

    The project, which includes a brick backstop and a new building complete with indoor batting cages and pitching mounds, will cost about $70,000. Of that, $50,000 is from a Schergens Foundation grant, $2,000 from the Tell City Electric Department and about $11,000 from the Friends of Frank Clemens, a group that has worked to solicit donations from the community.

  • Vocalist gets solo gold, qualifies for state

    HUNTINGBURG - Tell City High School's Sarah Roccia earned a gold rating at a district-level solo-vocalist competition Saturday, qualifying in the most-difficult category for a berth at state competition.

    She also performed with Kyra Lutgring and Michael Parr to earn a gold rating in a vocal-ensemble category. The Marksmen competed at Southridge High School, Huntingburg, one of nine sites hosting vocal or piano solo and ensemble contests last weekend.

    Another nine sites will produce state contenders in the same categories this weekend.

  • Two new school buses on their way to Perry Central

    LEOPOLD - The Perry Central School Board agreed at a meeting Jan. 21 to purchase two new school buses and filled several coaching positions in boys and girls sports.

    The two new buses purchased through Kerlin Bus Sales won't arrive for several months, Superintendent Mary Roberson said, and when they roll in, will have price tags of $88,222 each.

  • Kiplinger murder trial pushed back to July

    TELL CITY - Kyle S. Kiplinger's trial, scheduled to begin Feb. 12, has been delayed until July because a key witness for the prosecution is due to give birth the same week.

    Judge Lucy Goffinet granted a request to reassign the murder trial to the weeks of July 7 and July 14 in Crawford County. The case was moved there last year after a jury could not be seated in a first trial.

  • Sherry, Fortwendel seek re-election to county commissioner seats

    PERRY COUNTY - Incumbent Perry County Commissioners Don Sherry and Jody Fortwendel filed last week for re-election to their respective seats. The two Democrats will be on their party's ballot in the May 6 primary.

    Sherry is seeking a second term in District 1 while Fortwendel is running for a fourth term in District 3. District 1 covers all of Troy Township while Clark, Anderson and Oil townships form District 3.

    Candidates must live in their district but are voted upon by all voters in the county.
