INDIANAPOLIS — Here are some statistics about the effects of smoking on pregnant women and their unborn children.
• In the United States, more than 20 percent of women smoke. However, only 9 percent of women in underdeveloped countries smoke.
• If all the pregnant women in the U.S. stopped smoking, there would be about an 11-percent reduction in stillbirths and 5-percent reduction in newborn deaths.
• Smoking doubles a woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby and preterm deliveries.
