Public can register to receive calls when emergencies occur

BRANCHVILLE - The Indiana Department of Correction, in partnership with the Indiana Sheriffs' Association, is launching a new automated system to alert residents living near Branchville Correctional Facility and nearly two dozen other state correctional centers to public-safety emergencies.

The new service, announced last week, will keep residents informed of prison escapes, environmental hazards or other emergencies.

TELL CITY - Spirits are high among National Guard soldiers undergoing training at Fort Stewart, Ga., ahead of a deployment to the Mideast next month, and evaluators there are calling them "top-notch, the best they've ever seen," according to Staff Sgt. Jeff Hall.

PERRY COUNTY - Three student athletes, already familiar faces to Perry County sports fans, will have their likenesses displayed in school hallways and walls of local businesses. They're being honored for their commitments to abstain from tobacco and alcohol and for being role models for teammates, fellow students and the communities they belong to.

Work on Tell City's Main Street project progressed last week as employees of Kleeman Trucking and Excavating and the Tell City Electric Department removed sections of old sidewalk on the west side of the 500 Block of Main Street, including the area in front of The News and installed underground conduit for new street lamps. New lighting has been turned on in the 600 and 700 blocks of Main Street, creating a soft glow at night. Once work wraps up in the 500 block, crews will move to the 400 block, the last of the four blocks to receive sidewalk improvements and lights.
