  • Tennessee authorities jail child-abuse suspect

    TELL CITY - A 34-year-old man accused of molesting a child in Tell City's Sunset Park was arrested last week in Tennessee and could be in Perry County by week's end.

    Local authorities were waiting Friday for Shawn A. Pickett, who lives in Antioch, Tenn., to waive extradition to Indiana, Tell City Detective Alan Malone said. Tell City police asked Tennessee authorities to arrest the man, who apparently visited Perry County between Aug. 1 and Oct. 6.

  • Organization offers counseling for women

    PERRY COUNTY - Crisis Connection Inc. is accepting adult female clients who are ready to begin the process of healing from childhood sexual abuse.

    The counseling sessions are free, confidential and facilitated by social workers. The format is based on the Courage to Heal format, which offers practical, empowering first hand information while providing respectful, compassionate guidance through the healing process.

  • Tell City man killed in car fire

    Police: Vehicle was carrying meth-making ingredients

    TELL CITY - A Perry County man died Wednesday evening when the car he was driving caught fire along Boyd Road east of Tell City.

    Joseph Ray Dixon, 31, of 406 Main St., Tell City, died from smoke inhalation, Perry County Coroner Darrel Riley said Thursday evening. An autopsy was conducted Thursday afternoon in Evansville.

  • Girl Scout cookies available Monday

    PERRY COUNTY - Girl Scouts will begin filling cookie orders Monday and if you didn't have the chance to order a box or two, local troops will have cookie booths stationed around the county starting Friday.

    Friday's booths will be at Wal-Mart from 9 a.m. to noon, Fifth Third Bank from 3 to 6 p.m. and CVS from noon to 6 p.m. The News will publish a full listing of booths Thursday.

  • High water closes two stretches of state highway

    PERRY COUNTY - The rising Ohio River had two sections of Indiana 66 closed Friday.

    The Indiana Department of Transportation said Indiana 66 from the junction of Indiana 166 at Rocky Point to State Road 70 in Derby was closed. Indiana 66 from Derby to Indiana 62 in Sulphur was also closed.

  • Mayor names members to two governing groups

    TELL CITY - Mayor Barbara Ewing announced several appointments to two governmental bodies last Monday.

    Gilbert Spindler was reappointed to the Perry County Alcoholic Beverage Board. Joining the Tell City Plan Commission for four-year terms are Kaye Kleeman and Ryan Oberhausen.

    Ewing announced that Dennis Graves has resigned from the commission, leaving her with another seat to fill.

    A test-version archive-search box has been added to the upper-right side of each page. Unlike the search box above it, which finds only the stories in the current edition, the test version locates stories as far back as mid-October, when The News was switched by its parent company to a new Web-site system.

    TELL CITY - Police have released the name of a Tell City man whose charred remains were found inside a car on Boyd Road Wednesday evening.
