  • National Pet Adoption month

    TELL CITY - Orscheln Farm & Home will sponsor an adoption event Feb. 23 to promote National Pet Adoption Month.

    From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., patrons can visit the store and adopt animals from the Perry County Animal Shelter and receive goodie bags, which include samples of Science Diet. For more information call the store at 547-7444.

  • Girl Scout cookies available Monday

    PERRY COUNTY - Girl Scouts will begin filling cookie orders Monday and if you didn't have the chance to order a box or two, local troops will have cookie booths stationed around the county starting Friday.

    Friday's booths will be at Wal-Mart from 9 a.m. to noon, Fifth Third Bank from 3 to 6 p.m. and CVS from noon to 6 p.m. The News will publish a full listing of booths Thursday.

  • High water closes two stretches of state highway

    PERRY COUNTY - The rising Ohio River had two sections of Indiana 66 closed Friday.

    The Indiana Department of Transportation said Indiana 66 from the junction of Indiana 166 at Rocky Point to State Road 70 in Derby was closed. Indiana 66 from Derby to Indiana 62 in Sulphur was also closed.

  • Mayor names members to two governing groups

    TELL CITY - Mayor Barbara Ewing announced several appointments to two governmental bodies last Monday.

    Gilbert Spindler was reappointed to the Perry County Alcoholic Beverage Board. Joining the Tell City Plan Commission for four-year terms are Kaye Kleeman and Ryan Oberhausen.

    Ewing announced that Dennis Graves has resigned from the commission, leaving her with another seat to fill.

    Readers using the Perry County News Web site may have noticed some features added recently.

    A test-version archive-search box has been added to the upper-right side of each page. Unlike the search box above it, which finds only the stories in the current edition, the test version locates stories as far back as mid-October, when The News was switched by its parent company to a new Web-site system.

  • UPDATE - Police: Car was carrying meth-making ingredients

    TELL CITY - Police have released the name of a Tell City man whose charred remains were found inside a car on Boyd Road Wednesday evening.

    Joseph Ray Dixon, 31, of 406 Main St., died from smoke inhalation, Perry County Coroner Darrel Riley said Thursday evening. An autopsy was conducted Thursday afternoon in Evansville.

  • Behind the Wheel to Behind Bars

    Frank Swaney, top photo, an employee of Young's Wrecker Service, releases water from the interior of a waterlogged pickup truck that became stranded Monday in water over the boat ramp in Cannelton's Hafele Park. The driver, 23-year-old Charlie R. Roberts of Washington, was jailed for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Police said the truck belonged to Roberts' Kentucky employer and officers said the driver may not have had permission to be driving the full-size GMC truck. Theft charges are possible in Kentucky.

  • Forage-management focus of Tuesday's beef program

    TELL CITY - Purdue Extension will host a meeting on forage management Tuesday at the Perry County 4-H Fairgrounds. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately two hours.

    The 2007 summer drought was very hard on pastures in the area. Jason Tower, farm manager at the Southern Indiana Purdue Agriculture Center, will share information on how to manage pastures especially with the overgrazing that may have occurred in 2007.

  • Post office plans passport fair

    TELL CITY - Looking to cross the border soon? If so, plan early to get your passport. The U.S. Post Office in Tell City will host a passport fair Friday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employees will be able to help customers with the required forms. Applicants will be able to have the needed photograph taken at the post office. The post office will have forms on hand, but residents can download forms at http://www.travel.state.gov.
