  • Society takes history-book orders

    256-page pictorial collection helps celebrate sesquicentenniel

    TELL CITY - A new pictorial history of Tell City being published to mark the community's 150th anniversary will be available in July. However, the 256-page book's sponsor, the Tell City Historical Society, is currently taking prepublication orders through May 1.

    Members have been working on the hardback book, which covers the history of Tell City from its founding in 1858, for the past year and its chapters cover sports, schools, churches, notable personalities, businesses and industries.

  • Governor fields questions at Santa Claus business dinner

    SANTA CLAUS - Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels promoted his plan for property taxes and fielded questions about county-government structure during a dinner in Santa Claus that included local educators and politicians.

    The dinner was sponsored by several area chambers of commerce, including the Spencer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

    The Rev. Mike Shelton, pastor at Baker Chapel in Degonia Springs, gave the invocation.

  • Several port-rail projects progress

    Bond sold, business picks up, boat-builder's move into site advances

    TELL CITY - Business is picking up a bit and progress continues toward a major infrastructure project and a boat-building company's move into the Tell City Port, according to a Perry County Port Authority official.

    Dick Neumann, vice president and chief executive officer of the port authority and Hoosier Southern Railroad, was providing the port-rail agency board of directors an overview of recent activity at their regular meeting Wednesday.

  • School board approves hirings, staff retirement

    TELL CITY - Tell City-Troy Township School Board members heard about or approved a number of personnel actions in a regular meeting Tuesday.

    Schools Superintendent Ron Etienne reported the resignations of Brett Mulzer, assistant band director; Jamie Marshall, extracurricular secretary in the superintendent's office, and Ken King, elementary-school maintenance worker.

    High-school business teacher Ginger Krieg will retire at the end of the school year. Etienne said he'd post an opening for a football coach who can teach business or English.

    TELL CITY - A 31-year-old Perry County man was allegedly driving drunk and without a valid driver's license when his sport-utility vehicle collided with two parked Tell City police cars in the 300 block of 11th Street early Friday. The two officers, who were investigating a separate complaint at the time, escaped injury.

  • Former Marine files for county commissioner

    PERRY COUNTY - Brent Herzog feels he could do more as a county commissioner than by simply complaining about issues, the Democrat said Friday in explaining why he filed for the county's District 1 seat Tuesday.

    A former Marine and current resident of 1728 12t St., Tell City, he said he learned a lot about leadership through his time in the military and in scouting, where he earned Eagle Scout status.

    "The growth of the county is important to everybody's future," he said of issues facing the county. "Our children are the ones we should be concerned about."

  • Local physician to seek Statehouse seat

    Republican Marcrum challenging Stilwell in District 74

    TELL CITY - Dr. William Marcrum filed Thursday for the District 74 seat in the Indiana House of Representatives, providing a Republican challenge to incumbent Democrat Russ Stilwell.

    The District 74 seat covers parts of four counties: Perry, Spencer, Dubois and Warrick.

    A Tell City family-practice physician, Marcrum said House of Representatives seats should be held by citizen legislators who balance careers with public service.

  • Local school officials fear funding cuts

    Board member: You almost want to scream

    TELL CITY - "When you read legislative updates," Larry Bryant said Tuesday evening, "there are times you almost want to scream at the top of your lungs."

    In a regular meeting, the Tell City-Troy Township School Board member was participating in discussion sparked by School Superintendent Ron Etienne, who'd said "circuit-breaker" legislation now under consideration would cost the corporation nearly $300,000 per year for the next two years in tax revenues.
