  • UPDATE - Police say man who crashed SUV into two police cars was drunk

    Trooper alleges man's blood-alcohol content was twice legal limit

    TELL CITY – A 31-year-old Perry County man was allegedly driving drunk and without a valid driver's license when his sport-utility vehicle collided with two parked Tell City police cars in the 300 block of 11th Street early Friday. The two officers, who were investigating a separate complaint at the time, escaped injury.

  • Local school officials fear funding cuts

    Board member: You almost want to scream

    TELL CITY - "When you read legislative updates," Larry Bryant said Tuesday evening, "there are times you almost want to scream at the top of your lungs."

    In a regular meeting, the Tell City-Troy Township School Board member was participating in discussion sparked by School Superintendent Ron Etienne, who'd said "circuit-breaker" legislation now under consideration would cost the corporation nearly $300,000 per year for the next two years in tax revenues.

  • Retiring police chief prepares for new job

    After 31 years on city force, Faulkenberg stepping down; accepts community-service post at courthouse

    TELL CITY - After working the law-enforcement beat in Tell City for the past 31 years, Police Chief David Faulkenberg plans to retire at the end of this month.

    But Tell City's veteran lawman isn't ready to ride into the sunset. He'll begin work in the county courthouse March 3 as the circuit-court's director of community service.

  • Local churches plan fish dinners

    PERRY COUNTY - St. Paul and St. Michael Catholic churches will serve fish dinners Friday. From 4 to 8 p.m. dinners will be served in the St. Paul Catholic Church Parish Hall and beginning at 5:30 p.m., dinners will be served in Father Marendt Hall at St. Michael Catholic Church.

  • Some offices will be closed for Presidents' Day

    PERRY COUNTY - Federal and county offices will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents' Day. County offices will be closed at the courthouse in Tell City and the courthouse annex in Cannelton.

    City offices in Tell City will be open. In Cannelton, city offices in the lower level of the library will be closed, although the town utility office will be open Monday. Trash-pickup schedules won't be affected in Tell City or Cannelton.

    Troy's town hall and utility office will be closed Monday.

  • Deadline looms for no-call list

    INDIANAPOLIS - Tuesday is the next deadline to register for Indiana's Do Not Call List.

    Phone numbers placed on the list by 11 p.m. that day will begin receiving benefits of the law starting April 1.

    There are currently more than 1.9 million phone numbers registered on the Do Not Call List. Reregistering is not necessary if you retain the same phone number. The law currently benefits more than 3.5 million people.

    TELL CITY - In 2008, an estimated 770,000 Americans will have heart attacks, and about 430,000 will have recurrent attacks. More than 70 million Americans live with some form of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States.

    Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most start slowly with some discomfort. People are often not sure what is wrong and wait too long before getting help. Some possible signs of heart attack are chest discomfort, pain in the jaw and neck and pain and discomfort in the arms.

  • TC-PC Library board discusses possible Cannelton merger

    TELL CITY - A merger between the county's two libraries could happen with or without either board's approval according to Library Director Larry Oathout.

    At a Feb. 6 Tell City-Perry County Public Library Board meeting, Oathout told members he and Sally Walker, Cannelton Public Library director, have discussed the possibility of merging and what it would mean to both districts. While the idea of merging to unite the county libraries is not new, it could be forced because of the Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform report, also known as the Kernan-Shepard Report.

    Will feature two-week Christmas break

    TELL CITY - In a meeting where a winter break scheduled for Friday and Monday was canceled to make up for days lost this week to bad weather, the Tell City-Troy Township School Board approved a school calendar for next year that will feature a long Christmas break.

  • Cannelton officer takes helping children to heart

    CANNELTON - A desire to ensure students make it safely to school and a love of helping the community spurred one man's quest to become a reserve police officer. Since then, he's become an icon of sorts for students, staff and the citizens of Cannelton.

    Five days a week, in rain, sleet, snow and sun, Lewis Stubbs Jr. keeps a watchful eye on the students at Cannelton City Schools.

    He has been a Cannelton Police Department reserve officer since 2005 and spends his days making sure children cross the street safely. He also walks the halls to make sure the school stays safe.
