  • City commission OKs plans for new Subway restaurant

    Street-vacation near Tell Street tabled; firm wants to buy Ramsey land

    TELL CITY - Tell City's Subway restaurant is expected to change locations this summer, a move made more certain Thursday after Scott Dixon's plans for a new 1,600-square-foot building won approval from the Tell City Plan Commission. Dixon said the store, which will be located just off Old Highway Road and Hospital Road south of the Tell City Shopping Center, will include a drive-through. Dixon owns the site and will lease the building to the restaurant's operator.

  • Three charged with meth crimes

    TELL CITY - Three Tell City residents were jailed Friday on methamphetamine charges.

    Deanna Wheatley, 46, of 1447 13th St.; Dayna Clifton, 36, of 13834 Old Highway 37, and Clarence W. Horsley, 39, of 523 Franklin St. face charges of possessing meth.

    Clifton and Wheatley face more serious felony charges of dealing in the drug.

    According to court records, police found both women in a car driven by Clifton. Wheatley was allegedly found carrying more than 3 grams of methamphetamine.

  • County braces for wintry mix

    PERRY COUNTY - A combination of snow, freezing rain and sleet is forecast to hit the county Thursday, delivering another dose of winter weather.

    As The News went to press late Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service placed Perry County under a winter-weather advisory.

    Mixed precipitation was forecast to begin falling Thursday morning with significant icing possible. The county was hit with several inches of snow, ice and sleet Feb. 11. That weather event closed schools and made travel hazardous for several days.

  • Graves irked by billboard near city entrance

    Cannelton police chief hires officer to replace Humphrey

    CANNELTON - Cannelton residents will have to live with a large billboard at one of the entrances to their city, new Mayor Smokey Graves said at the first meeting of the city's board of public works and safety Monday.

    "The sign is huge," he said in describing a 32-foot billboard to be erected behind the "Welcome to Cannelton" sign along Indiana 66 on the north side of the city. The state highway department issued a permit to Lamar Outdoor Advertising, based in Baton Rouge, La., the mayor said.

  • Red Roses for Valentine's Day

    A bouquet of red roses, still the classic Valentine's Day gift, gets a final adjustment by Melissa Howard Thursday at Lauer Floral Center in Tell City. Howard and other employees assembled nearly 300 bouquets and other floral gifts for Cupid's holiday. A delivery of fresh roses arrived shortly before lunch as workers tried to stay caught up with last-minute orders.

  • Some offices closed today

    PERRY COUNTY - Federal and county offices will be closed today in observance of Presidents' Day. County offices will be closed, as will the utility office in Troy.

    City offices in Tell City will be open. In Cannelton, city offices in the lower level of the library will be closed, although the town utility office will be open Monday.

    There will be no mail delivery today. The Perry County News office will be open.

  • Bar association seeks artists

    PERRY COUNTY - The Perry County Bar Association is looking for artists who would be interested in submitting paintings of the county courthouse to be displayed in Indianapolis.

    According to a letter from the Indiana State Bar Association, the ISBA Special Committee on Courthouse Art has started a project to collect a piece of original artwork depicting each of the 92 Indiana county courthouses. The committee will accept paintings of modern or historical courthouses.

  • Pet adoption event Saturday

    TELL CITY - Orscheln Farm & Home will sponsor an adoption event Saturday to promote National Pet Adoption Month.

    From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., patrons can visit the store and adopt animals from the Perry County Animal Shelter and receive goodie bags, which include dog-food samples.

    Animals are also available for adoption at Orschen Farm & Home on a regular basis.

  • Oathout joins SIRS board of directors

    PERRY COUNTY - Larry Oathout of Perry County has joined the board of directors for Southern Indiana Resource Solutions Inc.

    SIRS is a nonprofit agency dedicated to ensuring equal opportunities and services for people with disabilities in Perry, Dubois, Spencer, Warrick and Vanderburgh counties.

    Director of the Tell City-Perry County Public Library since 2004, Oathout is a member of the Tell City Kiwanis, Tell City Regional Arts Association, Leadership Perry County board of directors and the board of directors of Perry County Even Start.
